أحد أعظم وأجمل الأصوات في الطبيعة، ولا شك أنه كان مادة خصبة للخيال البشر ونسجوا حوله أساطير على أنه نداء الأرواح وصوت العالم الآخر وما شابه، خاصة إذا سمع في غابة ضبابية ولا يرى مصدره.

الفرق بين العبد والحر هو فرق بالمبادئ ليس إلا. العبد يقدّم الحياة على أي شي ثاني؛ هو مستعد يضحي بأي شي ويعيش أي حياة مهما كانت ذليلة ومُهينة فقط حتى "يحافظ على حياته." هو شحّاذ يستجدي عمره استجداءً. لهذا من السهل إستعباده: هَدِّدْ حياته ورح يقدم كل تنازل تريده منه لأنّه يفضّل العبودية على الموت. بينما الحر يقدّم الحياة الكريمة فوق كل شيء. هو مستعد يموت ولا يعيش حياة الذل والعبودية. ما تهمّه الحياة بحد ذاتها بقدر ما تهمّه نوعيتها. لهذا هو حر، لأنّه يمتلك الحريّة الإنسانية الأخيرة اللي محد يكدر ينتزعها منه: حريّة الموت كما يشاء على العيش كما لا يشاء.

الأشخاص الذين يحبّونك سيكونون مستعدّين لـتحدّي "الخريطي" الخاص بك. أي، مواجهة الأفكار والسلوكيات الخاطئة لديك. لو تطلب الأمر، اولئك سيكونون أيضًا مستعدّين لتركِك، بدل أن يظلوا في خوفٍ مستمر من خسارتك. اولئك المحبّون لا يمتلكون "حاجة" لأن يكونوا دائمًا معك. بالنسبة إليهم إنّه قرار شخصي، يستمرون باختياره طوعًا. في فهم الحب، يجب الحذر من الذين يُشعرونك بأنّك مطلوب - بالمعنى التجاري للعرض والطلب - ودائمًا ما ينمّون شعور الغرور لديك، بدل أن تشعُر بأنَّك آمِن. والأمن - بمعناه النفسي، لا يأتي من إشباع الغرور.

And half of our drugs overall are produced via genetically-engineered bacteria, instead of chemical factories. When we wanted to make a really strong sticky material, we copied the Gecko's skin. And when we wanted to make our trains faster and quieter, we copied the birds. And when we wanted to solve a terribly annoying computational problem, we asked the ants for help.

Nature has always been the best problem-solver. She always comes up with ingenious solutions for impossible problems; from making a mammal aquatic, to kleptoplasty, and to the vulture's stomach that melts bone and withstands even the ugliest microbes. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Nature had billions of years and trillions of prototypes to experiment with. Her designs are so brilliant that one is often tempted to forget the chaos, randomness, and madness of her methods; if nature is a problem-solver, then she's a messy, mad artist at the same time, for one must not forget that many of the countless problems she aims to solve were made by Nature herself; a faulty gene here, or a lost organ there, and the organism is left for the harsh, unrelenting judgement of natural selection. Nevertheless, it still comes up with brilliant innovations that compete with and outshine the best human works in art and engineering. Engineers, following the example of Picasso when he said that "good artists copy, great artists steal", found that Nature was the greatest reservoir of great designs and resourceful plans to copy and steal. So they came up with a brilliant little trick that they called biomimicry: instead of coming up with something new, you can simply cheat by copying Nature, and it usually turns out much better than the best idea that the best designer can come up with.
