Traumatic Fibroma or Focal Fibrous Hyperplasia is a proliferative lesion of a benign nature, being one of the most common conditions of the oral cavity. It is caused by repeated trauma, with greater prevalence in the buccal mucosa (occlusal line), lip mucosa, tongue and gums. It appears in the oral cavity in the form of nodules, generally asymptomatic, and may interfere with chewing and speaking. Treatment is usually surgical excision. Do you know how to identify the Oral Manifestations of MEASLES? Koplik Spots are considered pathognomonic signs of Measles. Measles has an incubation period of 6 to 21 days. Approximately 48 hours before the onset of the Measles rash, patients may develop an enanthema or Macular rash that is characterized by Koplik Spots. The lesions are whitish, grayish or bluish elevations, measuring 1 to 3 mm with an erythematous base, and are usually seen on the buccal mucosa close to the molar teeth. Histoplasmosis, caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, is common in patients with untreated HIV, causing oral lesions and severe systemic symptoms. In the oral cavity, the infection manifests as painful ulcers, nodules, or plaques that can simulate squamous cell carcinoma. These lesions have raised edges and necrotic centers, which can make diagnosis difficult. Systemic manifestations include fever, weight loss, severe fatigue, hepatosplenomegaly, and lymphadenopathy. In advanced cases, breathing difficulties may arise, due to pulmonary spread, and gastrointestinal symptoms. The differential diagnosis may also include oral tuberculosis, and the use of histopathological exams and PCR is essential for the precise identification of the fungal agent and rapid initiation of antifungal treatment. The patient was treated  with systemic antifungals, in addition to returning to ART. 🩸Histoplasmosis in an HIV+ patient🩸 Male patient, 41 years old, diagnosed with HIV for 8 years, without regular use of ART (Anti Retroviral Therapy). Alcoholic, smoker and crack user. Admitted with intense fatigue and hyporexia. There was also an extensive ulcerated lesion on the soft palate. After incisional biopsy, the diagnosis was Histoplasmosis.

They can develop anywhere in the mouth, but persist predominantly on the roof of the mouth, on the inside of the lower jaw (lingual tori), or as growths above the teeth on the lip/cheek side of the jaw (buccal exostosis). 🐂 SCC of the lip with cutaneous horn overlap. An 85-year-old patient reports a 4-month evolution, without symptoms. Lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a type of skin cancer derived from squamous cells, commonly associated with chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This malignant tumor is common in areas with greater sun exposure, such as the lower lip, due to the lower amount of protective melanin and accumulated exposure over the years. A peculiar presentation of SCC is the presence of an overlapping cutaneous horn. The cutaneous horn is a dense keratin structure, similar in shape to a horn, that projects from the surface of the tumor. Although the cutaneous horn itself can occur in benign lesions, the presence of a neoplastic base, as in SCC, indicates the need for attention, as malignancy may underlie the keratinous layer.

🦱 Hair growth on the tongue after surgical reconstruction After resection of tongue lesions, especially extensive lesions such as SCCs in advanced stages, reconstruction may involve skin grafts taken from sites such as the forearm or thigh. These grafts may contain hair follicles that, when transplanted into the oral cavity, maintain their ability to produce hair. This condition, although rare, occurs due to the persistence of the characteristics of the donor tissue, including the presence of cutaneous appendages. Hair growth on the tongue is an infrequent but possible consequence and should be considered during surgical planning. Leukemia is a hematological neoplasm that replaces cells in the bone marrow and bloodstream with proliferative immature hematopoietic cells. Since leukemia is a systemic disease, we can observe manifestations in different parts of the body including the oral cavity. Although oral manifestations are not pathognomonic of leukemia, its presentation should catch your attention.
