Alternatively, another method is to do the final light cure through a layer of glycerin gel. To do this, place the composite as you normally would, lightcuring incrementally as normal. Once you have placed the final composite layer lightcure the restoration. Then place some glycerin gel over the cured restoration and lightcure again – this is the final cure through glycerine. Now rinse the glycerin off with water and finish and polish the restoration as normal. The result is a surface that is easier to polish and harder.

Overcoming the Oxygen Inhibition Layer using Glycerin Gel

When composite is light cured, the final layer is referred to as the oxygen inhibition layer. This means oxygen interferes with the polymerization of the composite, resulting in a sticky uncured final layer. There are two main ways to overcome this and remove this final layer. One method is to finish and polish the composite restoration. By doing this you will essentially remove the outermost oxygen inhibited resin layer. However, by doing it this way the dust from finishing and polishing can be difficult to remove from the restoration. Additionally the fine resin particles collect in the burs and discs used during the finishing and polishing stage, rendering them useless.

Ribbond’s unique mechanically interlocking leno weave prevents cracks within the composite resin matrix from spreading between the fibers. The purpose of using fiber reinforcements for preventing fracture failures is not to provide additional stiffness to the composite resin but rather is to provide the strength quality of fracture toughness.  The strength quality of fracture toughness is the ability of a material to resist rapid crack propagation. Composite resins do not fracture due to a lack of stiffness (flexural modulus). They fracture because they are brittle and lack the strength quality of fracture toughness.  Ribbond’s mechanically interlocking leno weave is one of Ribbond’s unique physical features that provides fracture toughness and prevents fracture failures. ● Hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors caused by the proliferation of endothelial cells. These lesions are not clinically apparent at birth. They typically appear within the first weeks of life as areas of pallor, followed by telangiectatic spots. ● These lesions are characterized by a distinct life cycle in which proliferation is generally limited to the first year of life, during which the growth rate decreases to match the child’s growth, followed by a variable involution phase.

● Lymphangioma is a hamartomatous malformation of the lymphatic vessels. Approximately 50% to 75% of lymphangiomas occur in the head and neck region. However, they are rarely reported in the oral cavity. ● If the tongue is affected, the most common site is the anterior two-thirds of the dorsal surface of the tongue, as shown in this case image. ● Clinically, these lesions may present with a rough, translucent surface resembling small vesicles, potentially causing discomfort, speech difficulties, or chewing impairment depending on their size and location. Diffuse ulceration in the Buccal Mucosa of a patient with Pemphigus Vulgaris Oral lesions are the initial manifestations in 50-80% of patients with pemphigus vulgaris and may precede skin lesions by 1 year or more. Patients typically present with diffuse, painful oral ulceration. It is difficult to observe intact blisters intraorally because the lesions rupture easily. However, a positive Nikolsky's sign (i.e., blistering of the mucosa or skin with application of firm lateral pressure) may be detected. Male patient, 20 years old, reported recurrent episodes of multiple ulcerations in the mouth, which were painful and took a long time to heal. He still had discomfort in his eyes. After a long joint investigation between the Oral Pathology and Ophthalmology team, the diagnosis of Behcet's Syndrome was made. Behcet's Syndrome (BS) is a multisystem inflammatory condition, with vascular involvement and the cause is still unknown, basically characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, uveitis and skin lesions.
