April 2026, German Chancellor Merz: "We all want the Middle East to return to peace & stability as quickly as possible. We all have a great interest in that"
Sept 2026: Merz's govt quadruples financing for Israel's wars on Gaza, Lebanon & Iran.
Germany has interest. But not in peace.
| 2 | NEW ARTICLE: An earthquake in 1923 destroyed Tokyo and killed more than 105,000 people.
In the three weeks that followed, the military, the police and armed militias killed around 6,000 more.
Mostly Koreans, but also Chinese workers, and Japanese socialists and anarchists. They were killed on the strength of a rumor the Home Ministry itself put on the wires.
Japan has never investigated. Its own Cabinet Office published a report on the killings in 2009, then disowned it in 2023.
408 of the dead have a name.

| 5 | Today, 82 years ago, the Nazis executed Ernst Thälmann, chairman of Germany's Communist Party, on Hitler's personal order.
What's less known: from his cell, he secretly wrote to Stalin, hoping to be traded to Moscow. His wife smuggled the letters out through the Soviet embassy in Berlin. Stalin filed them as top secret.

£1.5 million in bribes, handed to Iranian politicians by MI6. One officer later admitted he spent £700,000 of it himself.
73 years ago today the CIA and MI6 overthrew Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh. His crime was nationalizing Iran's oil, oil the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, today known as BP, had been taking for decades.
Britain blockaded the refinery. Froze Iran's money. Banned exports. When that failed they bought the parliament, and when that failed the CIA paid gangsters to riot in the streets.
Mosaddegh surrendered. The Shah's dictatorship followed.
The CIA has admitted it. Britain still refuses to.

| 7 | Happy birthday to Emiliano Zapata, born today in 1879 in Anenecuilco, Morelos.
A pivotal figure in the Mexican Revolution of 1910, he led an armed peasant revolt at the head of the "Liberation Army of the South," fighting to put land and power in the hands of the peasants:
"We fight for the land and not for illusions that give us nothing to eat […] With or without elections, the people are chewing the cud of bitterness."
Zapata was assassinated in 1919, lured into an ambush by government troops. His legacy lives on in the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), which rose up in Chiapas in 1994 and still fights for land reform and justice. | 3 158 |
| 8 | On this day 20 years ago, an Israeli airstrike killed 28 civilians in southern Lebanon. Sixteen of them were children.
The strike hit the same village, Qana, that Israel had bombed a decade earlier in 1996, killing 106 civilians sheltering in a UN compound. Israel claimed the building was a legitimate military target and refused to apologize.

| 9 | On 28 July 1915 the US invaded Haiti starting a brutal 19-year occupation of the country.
Conducted for selfish economic reasons and racist motives, the US waged two brutal wars against the native population, murdering thousands. American corporations were unable to accept Haitian independence while racist elements in US society including slave owners had never forgiven Haitians for launching the first successful Black rebellion against slavery.
France had already forced the freed slaves to pay reparations to their former slaveowners, a ransom Haiti was still repaying when the Marines arrived. Even when US troops left in 1934 Washington retained influence over Haiti's finances until 1947. | 3 012 |
| 10 | 76 years ago today, the US military slaughtered 400 Korean refugees at Nogeun-ri. First airstrikes, then three days of machine gun fire into a railroad tunnel.
41% of the certified victims were children under 15. 70% were women, children, or elderly men.
To this day, the US calls it a "tragedy," refuses to apologize, and has paid the survivors nothing. Not a single soldier was ever punished.
But the paper trail survived. A declassified letter from the US Ambassador, written the very day the killings began, spells out the policy: refugees who keep approaching
will be shot.

| 11 | Fidel Castro: "There is no other way but armed struggle"
Today, 73 years ago, the first bullet of the Cuban Revolution was fired.
It was on this day that Fidel Castro led the assault on the Moncada Barracks serving the US-backed Fulgencio Batista dictatorship. The attack, aimed at capturing weapons, backfired. Nine of the revolutionaries died in the fighting. Dozens more were captured and executed by Batista's forces in the days that followed. Castro escaped, and was arrested six days later.
The symbolic and daring action gave birth to the guerrilla organization that later carried the date of the attack on the barracks as its name: Movimiento 26 de Julio (Movement of July 26) better known as M-26-7.

| 13 | The PFLP's Japanese Guerrilla: Kozo Okamoto, the Red Army Fighter Who Joined the Palestinian Struggle, Dies at 78
Kozo Okamoto, the Japanese Red Army member who joined the PFLP, died Thursday in Beirut at 78. He was Lebanon's only recognized political refugee. The PFLP mourned him as Ahmad al-Yabani, Ahmad the Japanese.
A 24-year-old botany student when the JRA recruited him, Okamoto and two comrades opened fire at Lod Airport on May 30, 1972.
Twenty-six people were killed. His comrades died in the attack. Okamoto was captured, sentenced to life, and freed in the 1985 Jibril exchange.
To the Palestinian left, he was a Japanese Marxist who crossed continents for a cause not his own, the face of what internationalism meant in 1972.
Japan demanded his extradition; Beirut refused.
At his trial, seeking his own execution, he told the court: "When I was a child, I was told that when people died they became stars... We three Red Army soldiers wanted to become Orion when we died." | 2 263 |
| 14 | Today marks the anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China.
On 23 July 1921, thirteen delegates met in a house in Shanghai's French Concession and founded a party that would come to rule a fifth of humanity.
But did you know that two of the men in that room weren't Chinese at all?
They had been sent by Moscow — and one of them was picked by Lenin personally.
(And another thing: the party celebrates its birthday on 1 July. The congress actually opened on the 23rd. The round date was fixed later, from memory, in the 1930s.)

| 16 | She dated Trotsky's assassin. Her photograph became the face of anti-fascism.
Barcelona, 21 July 1936 — 90 years ago today. Days after Franco's coup was crushed in the streets, 17-year-old Marina Ginestà posed on the rooftop of the Hotel Colón, rifle on her shoulder. By her own account, it was the only time she ever held a gun. She was a translator and journalist for the Republic — and, years earlier, the girlfriend of Ramón Mercader, the man who would kill Trotsky.
Not a portrait of a soldier. A portrait of a generation caught inside history.

Reagan's answer: a covert war paid for by Saudi Arabia and armed with weapons Israel took from the Palestinians in Lebanon. 5,000 tons seized, exhibited in Haifa, shipped to Honduras in sealed containers. Price tag: $36 million, settled as a "gentlemen's agreement," nothing in writing. Reagan asked King Fahd for the money himself.
The US government admitted all of it in court in 1989, then gave Israel five paragraphs in the official report and classified the rest. The State Department's own volume on those years is still sealed in 2026.
Every document in the article: the signed Finding, the Pentagon trip report, the court stipulation, the memo North doctored. Highlighted, page by page.
Marxism is "terrorism" again. A president was just abducted from Caracas. Same war, new paperwork.
