🔆 Kerala becomes India’s first State ‘Free of Extreme Poverty’ 📍 Context: On November 1, 2025, Kerala will officially be declared free from extreme poverty, marking a national milestone in inclusive development. 📍 About the Initiative: ✅ Project: Extreme Poverty Eradication Project (launched in 2021) ✅ Identified: 1,03,099 individuals from 64,006 families as extremely poor. ✅ Support Measures: • 21,263 families received essential documents (ration card, Aadhaar). • 3,913 families were given new houses. • 1,338 families allotted land. • 5,651 families received up to ₹2 lakh for house renovation. • 3,822 families received livelihood support. 📍 Background: • As per NITI Aayog (2021), Kerala had the lowest poverty rate in India (0.7%). • The program focused on micro-plans for each family covering food, health, shelter, and livelihood. 📍 Significance: ✅ Sets a model for targeted poverty eradication at micro-level. ✅ Reinforces Kerala’s legacy in human development and social equity. ✅ Complements SDG 1 – No Poverty by ensuring no household is left behind. 📍 Mains Question: “Kerala’s success in eradicating extreme poverty demonstrates the power of targeted welfare governance.
