| 8 | Kerala has a new nationally registered indigenous cattle breed.
Periyar cattle has been officially registered by ICAR–National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR) as an indigenous cattle breed of Kerala.
📍 Home tract: Periyar River basin and adjoining forest/plantation landscapes of Kerala.
🐄 It becomes the second registered indigenous cattle breed from Kerala, after the famous Vechur cattle.
Why is this important?
Recognition helps:
→ Document unique animal genetic resources
→ Conserve locally adapted breeds
→ Protect valuable genetic diversity
→ Support sustainable use of indigenous livestock
→ Preserve India's livestock heritage
One fact to remember:
ICAR-NBAGR is India's nodal institution for the registration of livestock and poultry breeds.
Q: “India's indigenous livestock breeds are not merely genetic resources, but important assets for climate resilience, livelihood security and sustainable agriculture.” Discuss.
Let's brainstorm! | 10 880 |
