THE 5 Cs OF WRITING A LITERATURE REVIEW
A literature review is not just a collection of studies with a citation at the end of every paragraph. The real work is in understanding how those studies relate to one another and what they collectively tell you about your research.
Keep these 5 Cs in mind:
✅ Cite the relevant sources and establish where the evidence comes from.
✅ Compare studies that share similar findings, approaches, research questions or methodologies.
✅ Contrast studies that differ in their findings, approaches or methodologies.
✅ Critique the studies by considering whether their research questions, methods and conclusions are appropriate and convincing.
✅ Connect the literature back to your own research, showing how previous findings inform your study.
When these five elements work together, your literature review becomes more than a summary of what others have done. It starts building the academic argument for why your own study matter.
| 2 | SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
✅A research topic can be interesting enough to explore from many different angles, but trying to cover everything will quickly make a study too broad and difficult to manage. This is where scope and delimitation become important.
✅Scope defines the overall boundaries of your study, while delimitation specifies the particular aspects you have chosen to focus on within those boundaries. Together, they help you keep the research focused, realistic and aligned with your research question, available resources and timeframe.
✅Swipe through the slides for a simple breakdown of the difference, the key steps involved and examples of how scope and delimitation can be applied to a research study.

| 6 | MASTERING APOSTROPHES
✅Apostrophes (’) may seem minor in the grand scheme of academic writing, yet their correct use is central to the writer’s respectability. At best, misusing an apostrophe will confuse your readers and dilute the effectiveness of your work. At worst, it will prompt your audience to stop taking you seriously altogether. Learning how to use apostrophes is critical to ensuring the professionalism of your academic work.
✅Apostrophes serve two primary functions in English: indicating possession and forming contractions. While this seems straightforward enough, knowing exactly where to place an apostrophe can be challenging.

| 7 | RESEARCH DESIGN: THE BLUEPRINT OF YOUR STUDY
✅ Research design is more than choosing between qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. It’s the framework that connects your research questions, data collection, analysis, and ultimately, your findings.
✅ A well-planned design helps you work systematically, minimise bias, and avoid discovering halfway through your study that something important doesn’t quite work.
✅ Before you commit to a design, discuss it with your supervisor, consider a pilot study, and stay open to refining your approach as your research develops.
✅ And when your research starts turning into chapters, tables, references, and hundreds of pages, Proofreaders United can help with proofreading, editing, reference checking, formatting, and transcription services. 🔗 https://bit.ly/PU-form

| 8 | MIXED METHOD RESEARCH: Convergent Parallel, Explanatory Sequential, & Exploratory Sequential
Mixed methods research combines elements of quantitative research and qualitative research to answer your research question. Mixed methods can help you gain a more complete picture than a standalone quantitative or qualitative study, as it integrates the benefits of both methods.
Mixed methods research is often used in the behavioral, health, and social sciences, especially in multidisciplinary settings and complex situational or societal research.

| 11 | A SMARTER WAY TO USE PRISMA FLOWCHARTS AND PREVENT YOUR SYSTEMATIC REVIEW FROM BEING REJECTED ❌
Most PhD students stick to the basic PRISMA flow, but different review designs need different formats. Here is the simplest way to know which one to use.
✅ Classic Flowchart
Great for simple searches across a few databases. Clean and standard for straightforward reviews.
✅ Parallel or Sequential Search
Perfect when you search several databases at once or at different times. It shows how each source contributes to your dataset.
✅ Citation Based Search
Useful when your field relies on snowballing, key papers, and reference tracking. Helps you capture studies that databases miss.
✅ Search Update Flow
Important when your review takes time and you need to update your search. Journals prefer reviews with current data. | 562 |
| 12 | MANUSKRIP ANDA BAGUS. TAPI KENAPA MASIH DITOLAK JURNAL Q1? 🤔
✅10 OKTOBER | 10.00 PAGI – 12.00 TENGAH HARI

| 16 | REPRODUCIBILITY VS REPLICIBALITY IN RESEARCH!
If you think there’s no real difference between reproducibility vs. replicability, then you’re not alone. Many researchers use these terms interchangeably, unaware that reproducibility in research and replicability in research have distinct meanings and different implications.
Both these concepts are critical in ensuring research is credible, verifiable, and valid, making it important for researchers to know and understand the differences. To make it easier for you, we'd like to explain the meaning of the two terms with examples, emphasize their importance, and highlight the cause of the replication crisis in the following images. Read on!

| 18 | WRITING FOR IMPACT: JOURNAL METHOD
The methods section is the heart of your study, explaining how the research was conducted. From data sources to statistical analysis, it provides a roadmap for replicating your work. Here’s how to nail it:
✅Data Source: What data did you use? (e.g., Medicare Claims)
✅Patient Population: Who did you study? (e.g., patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer)
✅Outcomes: What did you measure? (e.g., 30-day complications)
✅Statistical Analysis: What methods did you apply? (e.g., logistic regression)
Pro Tip: Look at past papers and consult with your mentor for guidance, but make sure to write it in your own voice! Focus on crafting any new methods with care and precision.

| 20 | WRITING FOR IMPACT: JOURNAL INTRODUCTION
✅Writing a clear and compelling manuscript isn't just for top-tier journals—it's essential no matter where your work is published. Even if you're an experienced researcher, communicating your findings effectively increases the impact of your research.
✅Strong writing skills go beyond manuscripts: they help you explain complex ideas with clarity, which is crucial for public speaking, grant writing, and leadership roles in academia. By mastering these writing skills, you enhance your overall professional development and expand your ability to connect with different audiences.
✅We've previously covered abstracts, and now let's dive into the introduction. The introduction should set the context, highlight a knowledge gap, and preview your study plan, ideally broken into three distinct paragraphs for maximum clarity.
