President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing inspects seeds of crops produced through research works by Pulse Crops Research Section under Agricultural Research Department of Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Nay Pyi Taw June 5 President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing, accompanied by officials, inspected seeds of crops produced by the Pulse Crops Research Section under the Agricultural Research Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation on the Yezin Universities Campus in Nay Pyi Taw this morning. Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung and officials reported to the President on the production of seeds of pulse species, sunflower species and crops through the research works by the section. In response, the President delivered a speech, saying that the country is currently exporting various types of pulses to international markets, including green gram, black gram, pigeon pea, chickpea, lablab bean, and soybean, which meet market-quality standards. In order to further strengthen market access, it is necessary to continuously carry out quality control and improvement of these pulses, as well as ongoing re-search and production efforts to enhance their value. As pulse crops are economically important commodities that generate income through both domestic consumption and export, efforts should be made to continuously research and develop high-yielding, disease-resistant, and market-demand varieties that are suitable for local conditions. Although the various pulses currently being exported to foreign markets are of good quality, it is understood that there are still shortcomings when compared with pulses from other countries. In the re-search and production of pulse varieties, it is necessary to ensure that all three key factors—size, colour, and taste—are of high standard. Since soil and climatic conditions differ from region to region, variations in size, colour, and taste are also likely. Therefore, it is important to systematically conduct research and develop crop varieties that are suitable for each respective region. It is also necessary to further expand the production of sunflower and sesame seeds. In addition, when cultivated areas are expanded, seed production activities should be continuously conducted domestically through systematic research in order to meet the resulting seed demand. Research teams should be dis-patched to the regions with large cultivated areas but low yields so as to conduct research for seeking the solutions. Further-more, in exporting crops abroad, efforts should be made to achieve higher sales volumes even with lower profit margins per unit. The President then gave necessary guidance.

From 2021 to 2025, over 160,000 acres of plantations and over 122 million trees—including State-owned plantations, commercial plantations, industrial raw material plantations, water-shed plantations, mangrove plantations, and village fire-wood plantations—were plant-ed. This year, 2026, over 21 million trees will be planted on over 30,000 acres nationwide, including state-owned forest plantations. He stated that special greening activities are being collaboratively carried out with related departments in 13 districts of the arid zone, along railways, alongside ASEAN high-ways and main roads, in the Bagan Ancient Cultural Zone, and in areas around Inle Lake. Similarly, 1,715 acres of man-grove plantations and over 2 million trees were planted in coastal areas in 2025, and long-term plans spanning up to 2030 have been drawn up to establish mangrove plantations annually. Arrangements have been made to plant 54,180 trees in the union territory Nay Pyi Taw, regions and states and townships simultaneously on the same day at the same time in national level tree-planting ceremony and pre-monsoon tree-planting ceremonies in the rainy season in 2026. In doing so, everyone is urged to place emphasis on cultivation tasks to be carried out to ensure that each tree planted thrives well. To address climate change caused by emission of green- house gases, everyone is urged to place emphasis on boosting green investment and development tasks in relevant sectors that will reduce emission of carbon. Moreover, from individuals to departments and organizations are required to participate in activities of climate change adaptation, observation of climate information, upgrading early warning systems to reduce the damage caused by natural dis-asters and developing climate change adaptation habits. Only then, can a climate resilient and low carbon community be achieved. Therefore, I would like to urge all, “Let’s make concerted efforts to combat climate change by conserving the environment.” Then, the President presented prizes to responsible officials from Hpa-an, Kayin State, which won the ASEAN Sustainably Developed Cities, Thanlyin in Yangon Region, which won the national-level best environmental management, Bawnin New Village in Kalaw Township in Shan State, which won the national-level best environmental management village, and rice paddy processing business of Shwe Wah Nadi Agriculture from Nyaungdon Township in Ayeyawady Region. which won the national-level best environmental management enterprise award. Then, Vice President Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye presented the first, second and third prizes of national-level clean and green schools (high- and middle- school level) to winning schools. Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw U Khin Yi presented the first, second and third prizes of national-level clean and green schools (primary level) to winning schools. Speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw U Aung Lin Dway presented prizes to the first, second and third prize winners at the university/college level of the article writing competition marking World Environment Day and Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung presented prizes to the first, second and third prize winner at the basic education school level essay competition marking World Environment Day. Afterward, the President and attendees viewed the 2026 World Environment Day video messages of the UN Secretary General and the executive director of the UNEP and educational video of 2026 World Environment Day and posed for documentary photographs with prize winners. Then, the President and party observed the exhibition booths of 2026 World Environment Day and asked about matters of interest on reports of responsible officials.

These factors, along-side population growth, a developing transport sector, and escalating waste disposal problems, collectively contribute to the massive emission of green-house gases into the atmosphere. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is necessary to utilize renewable energy and use energy efficiently, as well as to reforest and conserve forests, and to develop climate-smart agriculture and livestock farming. Furthermore, waste management and the reduction and prohibition of the use of refrigerants with high global warming potential must also be carried out with momentum. Climate change is an environ-mental problem being faced globally, and it can only be con-fronted and resolved through the cooperation of international and regional countries. For this reason, Myanmar became a member state of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its subsequent treaties, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, and is cooperating and participating together with the international community in anti-climate change operations. The 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was held in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025, which was attended by the Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, who delivered speeches and held discussions on behalf of Myanmar at the plenary summit of world leaders and related meetings, and this demonstrated Myanmar’s cooperation with the international community to achieve a sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient future for future generations. As a member state, Myanmar is implementing its Nationally Determined Contributions sub-mitted to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in accordance with its commitments under the Paris Agreement to achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets to the best of its ability. He stated that it is necessary to emphasize priority areas in those action plans, such as developing renewable energy, planting and conserving forests and trees, developing climate-resilient agricultural systems, developing urban and industrial sectors capable of using energy efficiently, distributing firewood-substitute fuel-efficient stoves, implementing solar-based rural electrification, and increasing the production and use of zero-emission electric vehicles, and he would like to urge everyone to cooperate within their respective sectors to develop green businesses that reduce carbon emissions and support climate change mitigation and environ-mental conservation across all sectors. Then, he stated that he would like to urge related ministries, regions, and states to coordinate within their respective sectors and accelerate their collaborative implementation of the processes in Myanmar’s Climate Change Policy, Strategy, and Master Plan, which are being implemented to resolve the on-going climate change challenges, build climate resilience, and reduce carbon emissions. In alignment with the State’s objective, “Let us protect our environment for the prosperity of the Nation,” he would like to state that planting and conserving forests and trees is extremely important for environmental conservation and combating climate change. Therefore, to reduce deforestation and achieve a forest cover of 50 percent of the country’s area, reserved forests and protected public forests have been expanded to 26.11 percent of the country’s area, and 62 natural areas covering 6.59 percent of the country’s area have been established to conserve biodiversity. In order to protect against climate change, flooding, and soil erosion, and to prevent natural disasters in established forest areas, areas outside forest reserves, and inland regions, re-forestation activities are being carried out with momentum.

2026 World Environment Day observed, with an address by President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing Nay Pyi Taw June 5 The 2026 World Environment Day was celebrated at the University of Forestry and Environ-mental Science (Yezin) in Nay Pyi Taw this morning, addressed by President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Min Aung Hlaing. Also present were Vice President Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw U Khin Yi, Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw U Aung Lin Dway, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services General Ye Win Oo, union level dignitaries, union ministers, the Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, members of the Environmental Conservation Committee, deputy ministers, departmental personnel, invited guests, award winners, students of University of Forestry and Environmental Science and basic education schools, and officials. In his address, the President said that as today is World Environment Day, Azerbaijan—on behalf of UN member states—is hosting the 2026 celebrations in its capital city, Baku. Like-wise, other UN member states are also observing World Environment Day. Similar to other countries around the world, Myanmar is simultaneously holding commemorative ceremonies in Nay Pyi Taw, as well as across various regions and states. The core theme of World Environment Day 2026 “A Global Call for Climate Action” aiming to strengthen the human response to climate change, its adverse effects, and natural disasters. It also highlights the importance of taking immediate action to tackle climate change issues and promoting international cooperation. A harmonious balance existed between nature and human beings prior to the onset of industrialization. However, industrial development, alongside the rising use of fossil fuels as a primary energy source, has increased emissions of green-house gases like carbon dioxide and methane, which trap heat in the atmosphere. According to studies by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), global temperatures have exceeded the averages seen at the dawn of industrialization. In 2024, global temperatures hit a new record, and the temperature in 2025 was 1.43 degrees Celsius above the 1850–1900 average. This fact indicates an annual rise in global temperatures; if the situation goes unchecked, global temperatures could increase by 2.1 to 3.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. In addition, rising temperatures will be followed by more severe natural disasters. Countries worldwide, including Myanmar, face annual natural disasters, suffering noticeable economic and social losses. The 2026 Climate Risk Index from global climate watchdogs indicates that Myanmar remains on the list of the top 10 countries most affected by climate change. The country faces a higher risk of rising temperatures, extreme rainfall, storms, and cyclones. Central Myanmar is explicitly included in the list of regions experiencing the highest temperatures. In 2025, the temperature in Chauk hit 45.3 degrees Celsius, and this year, it stands at 44.9 degrees Celsius. At the same time, temperatures in 12 major towns across the area have reached 41 degrees Celsius and above. While global warming is a key driver, another root cause is the sparsity of trees in the region. Research shows that Myanmar planted over 269.8 million trees of various species between 2016 and 2025, roughly equivalent to one million acres of forests. While humans require wood for various needs, planting a new tree every time one is cut down will fully prevent deforestation. Therefore, coordinated multi-sectoral action is urgently required to mitigate climate change across the country. The main drivers of climate change include rising energy consumption, rapid industrial development, increased fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, changing land-use patterns, and the expansion of agricultural activities.
