Delhi court grants bail to US national Matthew VanDyke, one of seven foreign nationals arrested in connection with the terror training case linked to Myanmar. The court granted bail on a bail bond of ₹1 lakh and a surety of ₹1 lakh. Its name was Nalanda. Founded in 427 CE by Emperor Kumaragupta, Nalanda Mahavihara grew into one of the ancient world’s great centres of higher learning. For more than 800 years, its gates welcomed scholars and students from across Asia. They came from China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, travelling vast distances in search of knowledge. Among them was the Chinese scholar Xuanzang, who studied at Nalanda in the 7th century. When he returned to China, he carried hundreds of Buddhist scriptures with him for translation. It became a vast residential and scholarly centre, where learning unfolded through debate, philosophy and intellectual inquiry. Its traditions travelled beyond its walls and influenced later institutions across South and Southeast Asia. For centuries, its courtyards echoed with questions, discussions and the exchange of ideas. Then, the story took a darker turn. 🔥 Historical accounts recorded in the Archaeological Survey of India’s UNESCO nomination state that Bakhtiyar Khilji’s army set fire to Nalanda’s viharas and chaityas. A Government of India account says that the fire consuming Nalanda’s manuscripts continued for three months. Perhaps the most remarkable part of Nalanda’s story is not simply its age. It is the world that gathered around it. India was part of a vast Asian intellectual world where knowledge crossed borders, scholars travelled thousands of kilometres and institutions of learning flourished centuries ago. Today, the ruins stand in silence. Yet the ancient walls still offer a glimpse of a place where ideas travelled farther than borders, and the pursuit of knowledge brought distant civilisations together.
