Yesterday, my mother in law was trying to tell me about a Russian opinion poll in which respondents viewed Putin as less than stellar. She said it's because all the young men have been going to Ukraine for years and Putin won't stop. I told her that Zelensky won't back down either, and Ukraine now faces a population crisis because of it. She replied, "well, I didn't know that." I'm sharing this not to simp for Russia (although I find their culture comically fascinating, especially gopniks), but to illustrate the Boomer mindset. Her response was typical of her cohort, defensive when confronted with actual facts instead of legacy media narratives, as if she couldn't be held responsible for her ignorance because her approved sources told her something. These are the same people who spent the 60s telling everyone to question authority and never trust anyone over 30. They gave us the film mantra, "when you grow up, your heart dies." They were never interested in any of that. They were only ever interested in self indulgence, personal comfort, and reshaping society to excuse their selfishness. I can't stand them, I can't wait for them to die, and I'll cry my eyes out at my mother in law's funeral.
