Pearls How the shell gets made🤩 .....An oyster is a soft animal in a hard shell. It built that shell itself. A body layer called the mantle makes shell material, constantly, for life. 🐚How a pearl happens ....Sometimes those shell-making cells get knocked loose a worm drills through, the shell cracks, the animal gets hurt. The loose cells don't stop working. They form a small pocket and keep making shell material inside it. No flat surface to build on, so it grows outward in every direction.

That's a pearl. A piece of the shell factory in the wrong place, still running.

The sand story Not really true

Oysters push sand out. And if the point were to cover something up, the animal would stop once it's covered but it keeps going for years. A pearl doesn't protect the oyster. It's just cells doing their job somewhere they shouldn't be.

What it's made of ….sooo 95% mineral (basically chalk) + 5% soft glue. Chalk snaps. A pearl doesn't. It's much tougher than the chalk inside it. Why The mineral is in tiny flat plates, stacked offset like bricks, with soft glue between each layer. A crack can't run straight through it hits a soft layer and turns sideways. The plates slide instead of breaking.

Weak material + good arrangement = strong thing.

Why it shines The plates are about as thin as a wave of light. Light bounces off different layers and mixes with itself some colours strengthen, some cancel. That's the shifting colour. Same as a soap bubble. And the more even the layers, the shinier and the stronger. Beauty and strength from the same thing 🤍
