You do realise Degrelle was into politics pre-war, and his radical catholic movement (Rexism) was named after the famous saying "Christus Rex," or in English, "Christ the King." Léon Degrelle and his Walloon ϟϟ legion were devoted Catholics who went to mass often.. It's quite ironic you quote him. "In the background, the Hitlerite system was deeply religious. Nazi leaders hoped prelates would be willing to fight the Soviets on the basis of religious principle as well as ideological fervour. This brainwave was suggested by Himmler himself, who 'felt [that] a number of former Catholic clerics could perhaps be disguised as clergy behind the Russian lines; surely they would still understand their priestly business.' At the party chancellery, officials even suggested founding 'a new Catholic order with the objective of saving Christianity before Bolshevism' - a kind of twentieth-century revival of the Teutonic Knights. It was also felt that if the Vatican failed to give sanction, there were independent Catholic groups that would work together with the Reich, even without the licence of Rome.
