After twenty years of being wanted by the FBI, I've developed an annoying habit. Whenever the government tells me a story, I immediately start looking for the story behind the story. Experience will do that to you. Mark Twain supposedly said that if you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything. I have no idea whether he actually said it, but somebody should have. Governments have the opposite problem. Once they start telling one story while doing another, they spend years explaining why none of the odd parts are really odd at all. That's exactly what sent me down the rabbit hole on Sam Tunick. Read more at substack... https://open.substack.com/pub/chadzhower/p/the-fbis-favorite-shortcut-or-just

Well, the FBI has managed to shut down another story. For about a year, I have been working with a major U.S. news outlet and an established investigative writer whose reporting has helped free people who were wrongfully convicted. From the beginning, I warned them the FBI would stonewall the story. They told me this time would be different. The writer attended a court hearing and tried to speak with the prosecutor. They even warned the prosecutor, “We are coming to your office for an interview, whether you cooperate or not.” They said if the prosecutor refused to respond, the refusal would speak for itself. I gave them everything I had. Court rulings. Hearing transcripts. Evidence. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pages of official records. My ex-wife refuses to speak with them. They say they cannot find her. How convenient. The prosecutor refuses to speak. The FBI refuses to speak. Today, I was told there is a 99 percent chance the story is dead because the editor will not publish a story based only on my side. But this was never based only on my side. The other side has spoken through years of court records, sworn testimony, government filings, and hearing transcripts. Their refusal to answer basic questions is also an answer. This is the FBI playbook. Refuse to comment. Make everyone else refuse to comment. Then claim the story lacks both sides. My disappointment today is enormous, but the outcome is not unexpected. I warned the outlet from the first day this would happen. They assured me it would not. Yet here we are again.

“Where Is the Child?” reads like a Cold War interrogation scene rewritten by someone who survived it and kept his sense of humor intact. Inside a Bulgarian police chief’s office, Chad Z. Hower sits across from an American embassy officer who seems to believe volume, repetition, and a thick folder equal intelligence work. What follows is tense, absurd, and darkly funny. The danger is real. The Interpol alert is real. The setting is real. But the interrogation itself feels like a man trying to play Jason Bourne after studying from Interrogation for Dummies. The power of this chapter is in the contrast. Lance leans forward, gets louder, asks the same question again and again. “Where is the child?” Chad answers with the same calm line. “I’m not willing to discuss that without a lawyer.” The result is a scene that starts as intimidation and slowly turns into exposure. Not of Chad, but of the man trying to break him. It is sharp, uncomfortable, and hard to stop reading. A true-story legal thriller with the kind of absurdity fiction would be afraid to invent. https://chadzhower.substack.com/p/where-is-the-child

A locked police station. A dead watch. A wooden bench. Then a U.S. Embassy officer arrives uninvited with a passport and a file thick enough to feel like a sentence before anyone says a word. Hower turns a small office into a pressure chamber. Veronica leaves. The Police Chief steps out of his own office. Lance Woody waits until there are no witnesses, then drops the polite act. He does not ask questions. He opens with prison. Sharp, cinematic, darkly funny, and disturbing because it reads like a spy thriller, except the threat is real. A standout scene that makes you feel the machinery closing in. Read in full here: https://chadzhower.substack.com/p/the-cowboy-arrives
