Pushes back the origin of Homo sapiens The fossils are approximately 300,000 years old, making them among the earliest known fossils attributed to Homo sapiens. 🔹 2. Challenges a simple East African origin model Jebel Irhoud is located in North Africa, suggesting that early Homo sapiens populations may have been distributed across different parts of Africa. 🔹 3. Supports a Pan-African model Modern humans may not have evolved in one isolated population alone. Different African populations could have contributed to the emergence of Homo sapiens. 🔹 4. 📚 MINDS OF ASPIRANTS | ANTHROPOLOGY 🪨 PALEOLITHIC CULTURES — IMPORTANT SITES SITE → LOCATION → SIGNIFICANCE. ⸻ 1️⃣ SINGI TALAV — RAJASTHAN 📍 Location: Western Rajasthan, near Didwana 🔹 Excavated by V.N. Misra and his team. 🔹 Acheulian assemblage included: • Choppers • Polyhedrons • Bifaces • Scrapers • Points 🔹 Quartzite and quartz were important raw materials. 👉 Mains Value: Shows adaptation of Acheulian populations to the semi-arid landscape of Rajasthan. ⸻ 2️⃣ BHIMBETKA — MADHYA PRADESH 📍 Location: Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh 🔹 Rock-shelter III F-23 yielded a 4 m thick cultural deposit. 🔹 Evidence of: • Acheulian • Middle Palaeolithic • Upper Palaeolithic • Mesolithic occupation 🔹 Acheulian level contained stone-paved occupation floors. 🔹 Around 4700 artefacts were recovered from a 16 m² excavated area. 👉 Mains Value: Excellent example for explaining long-term human occupation and cultural succession. ⸻ 3️⃣ LALITPUR — UTTAR PRADESH 📍 Location: Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh 🔹 Produced an early, in-situ Acheulian assemblage. 🔹 Tools were made primarily of granite. 👉 Mains Value: Demonstrates the importance of locally available raw materials in Palaeolithic technology. ⸻ 4️⃣ PAISRA — BIHAR 📍 Location: Munger district, Bihar 🔹 Important Acheulian site. 🔹 Acheulian levels occurred beneath thick colluvial deposits. 🔹 Excavations revealed possible evidence of dwelling structures: • Post-hole alignments • Circular arrangements of stone blocks 👉 Mains Value: Goes beyond tools and provides evidence for settlement behaviour and temporary habitation structures. ⸻ 5️⃣ CHIRKI-NEVASA — MAHARASHTRA 📍 Location: Pravara River, Maharashtra 🔹 Acheulian material was found in colluvial gravel. 🔹 Tools were mainly made of dolerite. 🔹 Associated with fossil remains of wild cattle and other animals. 🔹 Assemblage included: • Handaxes • Cleavers • Knives • Chert and chalcedony flake tools 🔹 Interpreted as a seasonal, multi-purpose camp. 👉 Mains Value: Useful for linking technology + subsistence + seasonal mobility. ⸻ 6️⃣ MORGAON — MAHARASHTRA 📍 Location: Deccan basalt landscape, Bhima drainage system 🔹 Acheulian artefacts were found in ancient sediments. 🔹 Assemblage included cleavers and handaxes. 🔹 Local basalt was extensively utilised. 👉 Mains Value: Demonstrates technological adaptation to the Deccan raw-material environment. ⸻ 7️⃣ HUNSGI–BAICHBAL VALLEYS — KARNATAKA ⭐ 📍 Location: Northern Karnataka 🔹 One of the most important concentrations of Acheulian sites in India. 🔹 Hunsgi and Yediyapur yielded in-situ Acheulian cultural levels. 🔹 Rocky ridges were used for: • Camping • Open-air activities • Temporary shelters 🔹 Locally available rocks such as limestone were utilised. 👉 Mains Value: Excellent evidence for understanding site selection, raw-material procurement and temporary habitation. ⸻ 8️⃣ ISAMPUR — KARNATAKA ⭐⭐⭐ 📍 Location: Hunsgi Valley, Karnataka 🔹 One of the most important Acheulian quarry-cum-camp sites. 🔹 Hominins exploited a local limestone outcrop for tool manufacture. 🔹 Excavations revealed: • Cores • Flake blanks • Finished tools • Hammerstones • Manufacturing waste 🔹 More than 15,000 artefacts were recovered from one trench. 🔹 Evidence of chipping clusters indicates actual tool-manufacturing activity at the site. 🔹 ESR dating of associated fossil tooth enamel places the site at approximately 1.2 million years ago. 👉 Mains Value: Perhaps the BEST Indian example to demonstrate: Raw material source → tool manufacture → waste → finished implements Therefore, Isampur helps reconstruct the entire chaîne opératoire of Acheulian technology. ⸻ 🧠 HOW TO USE THESE SITES IN MAINS? Instead of writing: ❌ “Important Acheulian sites include Bhimbetka, Hunsgi, Paisra and Isampur.” Write: ☑ “The Indian Acheulian record provides evidence not merely of stone-tool manufacture but also of raw-material procurement, habitation and activity organisation.
