It explains how natural selection shapes behaviours that improve an individual’s reproductive success (fitness) and ensure the survival of its genes. ⸻ Core Principle The central idea of sociobiology is: Behaviour evolves because it increases the chances of passing genes to the next generation. In other words, Natural Selection → Behaviour → Survival → Reproduction → Gene Continuity ⸻ Key Concepts 1. Genotype vs Phenotype Genotype: Genetic makeup. Phenotype: Observable characteristics, including behaviour. Sociobiology argues that behaviour (phenotype) has evolved to protect and propagate genes (genotype). ⸻ 2. Behaviour has Evolutionary Value Every social behaviour should make evolutionary sense. Examples: Cooperation Parental care Group living Warning calls Food sharing These behaviours survive because they increase reproductive success. ⸻ 3. Kin Selection The most important concept in sociobiology. Individuals help their genetic relatives because relatives share many of the same genes. Helping relatives indirectly helps your own genes survive. Examples Mother caring for children. Worker bees protecting the queen. Squirrels giving alarm calls to relatives. ⸻ 4. Inclusive Fitness Fitness is not only about your own offspring. It also includes the reproductive success of your close relatives. Inclusive Fitness = Personal Reproductive Success + Success of Genetic Relatives ⸻ 5. Altruism Helping another individual at a cost to yourself. Example: A monkey warning others about a predator. At first glance it seems disadvantageous, but if the beneficiaries are relatives, the helper’s genes are still being promoted. ⸻ 6. Reciprocal Altruism Helping non-relatives with the expectation that they will help you in the future. Example: Vampire bats sharing blood meals. Primates grooming each other. Sentinel behaviour among unrelated animals. Principle: “I help you today; you help me tomorrow.” ⸻ 7. Fitness Fitness means reproductive success. The individual leaving the highest number of surviving offspring has the greatest evolutionary fitness. Criticism of Sociobiology Overemphasizes genes while underestimating culture. Human behaviour is also shaped by learning, environment, and social institutions. Sometimes misused to justify racism or social inequality (not supported by modern biology).

Culture is a System of Symbols For Geertz, culture is a network (complex) of symbols through which people understand and interpret reality. 2. Religion is a Symbolic Subsystem Religion is not the only system of symbols; it is a sacred symbolic component within the larger cultural system. 3. Symbol as a Vehicle of Meaning A symbol is any object, act, event, quality, or relationship that represents an idea. It acts as a vehicle for conveying concepts. 4. Symbols are Tangible Expressions of Ideas Symbols transform abstract thoughts into concrete forms. Example: The Cross, Om (ॐ), National Flag. 5. Symbols are Multi-layered A single symbol can possess multiple meanings depending on the cultural context and interpretation. 6. Symbolic vs Empirical Reality Geertz distinguishes between: Empirical reality → Actual social action. Symbolic reality → The meaning or blueprint behind the action. Culture is Both a Model of and Model for Behaviour Model of reality → Explains how society is. Model for reality → Prescribes how individuals ought to behave. Initially regarded as one of the earliest human ancestors, later discoveries and improved fossil evidence dramatically altered this interpretation. The controversy surrounding Ramapithecus and Sivapithecus is one of the most important examples of how scientific knowledge evolves with new evidence. ⸻ Why did the controversy arise? The controversy emerged because: Fossil evidence was extremely fragmentary, consisting mainly of teeth and jaw fragments. Different researchers interpreted the same fossils differently. New fossil discoveries from different regions were given different names. Improved comparative studies later suggested that many of these fossils belonged to the same evolutionary group. ⸻ Historical Development 1. Discovery (1934) G. Edward Lewis discovered jaw fragments in the Siwalik Hills. He named the fossil Ramapithecus, believing it represented a new primate. ⸻ 2. Yet, hidden in the heart of India lies one of the most fascinating mysteries of paleoanthropology—the Narmada Human. Discovered in 1982 by geologist Arun Sonakia from the Hathnora site in the Narmada Valley (Madhya Pradesh), the fossilized skull cap of the Narmada Human remains the only well-preserved hominin fossil ever discovered in the Indian subcontinent. Even after more than four decades, it continues to stand alone—earning the title “The Loneliness of the Narmada Human.” Why is the Narmada Human so important? India lies geographically between Africa, where modern humans originated, and East Asia, where several archaic human species evolved. Logically, India should contain abundant evidence of human migration and evolution. Surprisingly, the fossil record is almost empty. This makes the Narmada fossil extraordinarily valuable.
