| 2 | Some of you wanted to know my sources for prelims and have messaged me for the same.This is a post that I had already shared.Sharing it again for those who asked for it and anyone else who might benefit .
Sources used for PRELIMS in my CSE attempt in 2021:
1.Polity:Laxmikant (Fifth Edition), did not refer to any NCERT here.
2.Modern History: Spectrum(2017 Edition),again did not refer to any NCERT here
3.Ancient India: RS Sharma (old NCERT)
4.Medieval India: Satish Chandra (old NCERT)
5.Art and culture: Nitin Singhania Book (2nd Edition).Personally I did not refer to fine arts NCERT as Nitin Singhania book chapter 1 and 2 served the purpose for me.You can choose to refer fine arts book also as per your convenience.
6.Also referred to THEMES (new NCERT) for ancient and medieval history as some information on travellers,scholars,Buddhism etc is given here and UPSC has asked questions from the same in the past.
7.Did not use the Tamil Nadu text book for ancient medieval n art and culture.
8.Geography: NCERT for class 11th and 12th.The book on World physical geography and Indian geography are more important than Human Geography for prelims,so focus should be on doing them thoroughly and revising. From Human Geography do read chapters on agriculture and minerals from Indian geography NCERT book .
Some selective reading of chapter on agriculture etc can be done from class 8-10 Geography NCERT based on your basic knowledge on the topic and time at hand.
8.Economics: Class notes of Anupam Sir@Smart work Labs IAS Academy (very useful for economy and agriculture especially since no standard static source for economy is available in the market)
9.Environment:ShankarIAS book (entire book is not to be read only a few important chapters like climate change organisations ,international conventions and few chapters on ecology etc).Please refer to PYQs for topics that UPSC is asking questions from and then selectively read the book(if time permits I will post separately a list of chapters to be read from this book).
10.Did not refer to any static material for science and technology as coming from science background I believed that I would be able to manage the same.For non-science background students selective reading of class 11 and 12th NCERT Biology book can be done based on time available but current affairs should be primary source to prepare the science and technology section.
10.For all current affairs related topic from polity,economy,environment science and technology,IR and social issues I referred to the Vision IAS monthly current affairs magazine and PT365 before prelims for revision.It is advisable to follow one magazine of any institute of your choice and revise it multiple times rather than reading 2-3 CA magazines.
11.I did not follow any newspaper for prelims OR made any sort of notes (this strategy of relying on a magazine rather than reading newspapers is very different from many candidates but it was a personal choice and therefore you are advised to decide what would be an appropriate strategy for you).
All the sources that I have mentioned above I made sure that I revised them multiple times at least 5-7 times(depending on my weak areas) before the prelims exam and supplemented my preparation by solving test papers for the same.

I thought this could make a good introduction for an essay on a theme related to science and tech especially AI. You can tweak this idea based on the stand you wish to take in the course of your essay.

A.Some suggestions for science and tech and economics:
1.Clear your basics by which I mean know the definition and understand the meaning of basic terms. eg: for economics terms related to monetary policy, banking,inflation etc should be clear to you. Similarly for science n tech have clarity of concepts oft repeated like gravitational waves, artificial intelligence, gene therapy, basic terms related to genetics etc.
2.Sources for science and tech and economics can vary from person to person. The objective however is to achieve point 1. But keep in mind that u need to have a mix of static and current affairs for these topics. Therefore, choose one standard source for each.
3.Revision is the key again. The more you revise the better you get at it. Since the nature of topics is dynamic you would also need to constantly update yourself with the latest information. So, revision plus constant updation works best for these areas.
4.Prelims mode must be on now(at least for some).You could use the prelims test series as a source to identify your weak areas and while you have time at hand you can work on improving those areas to score higher.
5.If you are weak in any of the above areas then identify some strong areas too. While you have to rise above average in weak spots you also have to learn to play with your strengths, so work on that aspect as well. Eg: I identified polity and history as my strength and tried not to get questions wrong from those sections, you can identify similar things for yourself.
6.It’s too early to lose confidence even if you are not scoring well now . You have ample of time and if you use it wisely, you can really turn the tables. Just keep working smartly. | 24 646 |

This pdf 👇🏻is just to give you an idea of how the state specific or notes in general have to be prepared for the personality test .
These were made based on tentative questions that I gathered from various sources including the interview transcript. The answers were collected from some state specific books or online sources. Do not delve into whether the information is correct or not, as it was all prepared during the preparation phase and there are chances of error. In fact some answers could be very naive and need fine tuning. The basic idea is to give you a glimpse of how to prepare your notes for the interview. This will not take much time , the basic structure can be prepared in a week’s time and information could be added as a when u encounter something new. This same approach has to be followed for other points mentioned in your DAF that I addressed in my previous post.

| 14 | DAF: Preparation of DAF is one of the most important component of PT prep.
Points to keep in mind while preparing DAF :
1.Know about every word written in your DAF. Eg: meaning of your name, your home district, state , school, college etc
2.Prepare some finer details as well.Eg: after meaning of your name, the next question could be your strength and weakness(prepare at least 5 points), go beyond mere adjectives and also find answers to questions like how something became your strength and what advantages does that serve you(both in life in general n in the service)
Again prepare finer details like 5 good things/positives of your home district/state/school etc and similarly 4-5 challenges that needs to be addressed and how you plan to contribute or what suggestions you can offer about the same .
3.With respect to your hobbies or leadership roles/ prizes etc prepare every bit of a very obvious question from the same. The best way to do this is to use an interrogative word before every topic n find answers. Eg: if your hobby is painting then:
Why painting, when started painting, how do u paint , what color or themes you like , which is the best painting you made etc.
Use this approach for the all the keywords you find in your DAF.
4.Prepare some answers on themes that are relevant to your DAF like health sector in my case so I prepared some topics like how to use medical knowledge in different services, some pressing issues in medical sector like pvt colleges charging high fees, crunch of doctors n nurses, healthcare for all, issues in healthcare in India/ my state/ district etc.
DAF is like a your introduction before the interview board and a sort of a first impression so it is not only important to fill it well but also to know it well.
Quick tips on filling ur DAF :
1.At least be clear about first 5-7 service preferences by which I mean think that just in case u land up in any of them, will you be willing to work in that field . Don’t fill your preferences based on what people say.
2.You can leave some areas blank eg: sports section if u don’t have any significant thing there. It is better than faking and landing in trouble later.
3.In case you don’t want to opt for a particular service or cadre, u can fill “not opted” also. Mock interview boards might scare you with things like the UPSC board would not like it etc n then give you poor marks. I know of many selected candidates who have not opted for some service or cadre and the board is not really concerned about it.
Word of caution: when you don’t opt for something be very very clear as to why you don’t want it. If your reason is sound enough, it will always be welcomed.
4.Don’t try to fill too many achievements. Have 2-3 points for each heading n prepare that well. Also try to keep your DAF versatile .

| 20 | Then there are some topics which are evergreen and hold a probability of being asked irrespective of the year and whether they are currently in news or not. For those topics prepare some quick notes, not every elaborate but something that u can answer in 1 min with clarity.
