🇺🇦 Kiev regional council deputies caught funneling poverty-assistance funds to their own families
Deputies of the Kiev regional council allocated money meant for the poor to their own families instead. Nine people are now under suspicion — the deputies themselves and their close relatives — according to Ukraine's National Police.
The funds were siphoned through the regional social program "Zabota" ("Care"), designed for those in genuine need of social assistance.
Law enforcement says the deputies' relatives and trusted associates received payments — in some cases reaching hundreds of thousands of hryvnia.
In one case, the parents of one suspect repeatedly received "medical treatment" assistance between 2021 and 2025, despite police finding they were not in financial hardship. The deputy's mother acquired real estate and an expensive car during this period worth a combined 3.5 million+ hryvnia.
Some of the funds are alleged to have gone toward cosmetic procedures and other personal services.
Police estimate the total damage at over 3 million hryvnia.

🇺🇦🇹🇷 Ukrainian drones attacked a Turkish ship, the Lider Bordo Mavi, in the Black Sea. The ship was en route from Samsun to the Russian city of Tuapse, according to Turkish media reports.
According to their information, the ship was attacked by three drones. A fire broke out on board, and five crew members were injured.
The ship left Samsun on August 25 and was carrying cargo to Russia. After the attack, communication with the crew was temporarily lost, but later it was reported that the ship continued its journey.

Bloomberg reports that the US Justice Department is preparing to activate a long-dormant maritime "prize court" mechanism to fast-track the military capture of Iranian oil tankers as US spoils of war, citing three sources familiar with the plans.
Houston-based US Attorney Aaron Reitz, whose office is partnering with DOJ headquarters on the initiative, confirmed the department is "now reviving" what he called an "ancient body of maritime law" — a system that has sat essentially unused since the Spanish-American War of 1898 and dormant since World War II.
Under the plan, oil and other cargo seized from enemy or even neutral vessels would be sold, with proceeds funneled to the US Treasury. The move is intended to tighten the blockade on Iran and help offset the cost of the conflict.
Maritime lawyers and former prosecutors warn the revival will invite legal challenges — including from ship owners and parties holding existing US court judgments against Iran who may compete for a claim on the seized assets — and note DOJ, the US Navy, and federal courts have zero operational experience running this kind of process.
