The philosopher, as Olympiodorus says, seeks death, namely the separation of the soul from the body. This Alexandrian Neoplatonist claims that "preparation for death is not an end in itself... the real goal is being dead. To be dead is to be like Osiris, who waits to be united with Ra ba, whose unity in the Duat belongs to the integrated philosophical life. Philosophising in the Osirian underworld necessitates the use of knowledge, which is necessary for the alchemical transformation that is required to become a vindicated and maakheru.
