Chinese Businessman-Turned-Buddhist-Monk Cares for 600 Abandoned Children
A Chinese businessman who became a Buddhist monk has been caring for 600 abandoned children, ranging in age from newborns to 10-year-olds, for the past 12 years. Monk Daolu, affectionately known as “Papa Wu,” from Jiangsu Province in eastern China, also offers shelter to women dealing with unexpected pregnancies.
Monk Daolu first publicized his contact information on social media in 2012, noting: “For those who are unable to care for their children, we are willing to provide shelter and assistance.” (South China Morning Post)
Many women in need contacted Monk Daolu, who handled everything from prenatal care to delivery, including fees, surgery arrangements, and waiting outside the operating room.

| 2 | Monks in Korea Welcome the Return of Buddhist Relics after 85 Years in US Museum
“After about a century of separation, the relics of the Buddha have finally returned to their rightful abode,” said Venerable Hosan of the Jogye Order, who was a member of the Jogye Order delegation that brought the relics back to Korea.
According to Chinese-character inscriptions on the stupas, the sarira are associated with Buddha Shakyamuni, Kassapa Buddha, and Dipamkara Buddha, as well as the Buddhist monks Naong (1320–76) and Jigong (d. 1363).

| 3 | The way of the Sage
I shall school you in sagacity,
so difficult and challenging.
Come, I shall tell you all about it.
Brace yourself; stay strong!
Guard against ill-tempered thoughts,
wander peaceful, not frantic.
Women seduce a sage.
May they not seduce you.
Abstaining from sexual intercourse,
abandoning various sensual pleasures,
be unopposed, unattached, to beings moving & still.
Leaving behind desire and greed
for what ordinary people are attached to,
one whose eye is clear would set out to practice, they’d cross over this abyss.
That wise one intent on absorption,
would delight within the forest.
They’d practice absorption at the foot of a tree, filling themselves with bliss.
Train in a lonely seat,
attending closely to ascetics;
solitude is sagacity, they say.
If you welcome solitude,
you’ll light up the ten directions.
— Buddha, Nalaka Sutta (Samyutta Nikaya 3.11) | 224 |
| 4 | ‘I’ve struggled hard to realize this,
enough with trying to explain it!
Those mired in greed and hate
can’t really understand this teaching.
It goes against the stream, subtle,
deep, obscure, and very fine.
Those besotted by greed cannot see,
for they’re shrouded in a mass of darkness.’
Then, understanding Brahmā’s invitation, I surveyed the world with the eye of a Buddha, because of my compassion for sentient beings. And I saw sentient beings with little dust in their eyes, and some with much dust in their eyes; with keen faculties and with weak faculties, with good qualities and with bad qualities, easy to teach and hard to teach.
Then I replied in verse to Brahmā Sahampati:
‘Flung open are the doors to freedom from death!
Let those with ears to hear commit to faith.
Thinking it would be troublesome, Brahmā,
I did not teach
the sophisticated, sublime Dhamma among humans.’ | 1 |
| 5 | Turning the Dharma Wheel
The Bhagavān then spoke these verses to that ascetic:
“I’ve become an arhat
Supreme and without comparison.
Among gods and worldly people,
I’m now unsurpassed.
“I have no teacher
And no other equal, either.
I’m the sole worthy who’s without flaw,
Cooled and no longer warmed.
Now, I will turn the Dharma wheel
And go to visit Kāśī.
Now, with the happiness of immortality,
I’ll reveal their benightedness.
The realm of Bārāṇasī,
The royal domain of Kāśī,
That’s where the five monks are living
To whom I’m going to explain this subtle teaching.
They will swiftly be awakened
And realize their contaminants have ended.
Eliminating the origin of what’s evil,
Therefore, is the greatest thing.”

| 8 | Let one train oneself in sitting alone and in the resort proper to a recluse. Solitude is called sageship, and if you will delight in being alone, then you will illuminate the ten quarters.
Having wandered for alms,
they’d take themselves into the forest;
and nearing the foot of a tree,
the sage would take their seat.
That wise one intent on absorption,
would delight within the forest.
They’d practice absorption at the foot of a tree, filling themselves with bliss.
Don’t be sluggish in mind,
nor think overly much.
Be free of putrefaction and unattached,
committed to the spiritual life.

| 11 | Lingshan Grand Buddha (Wuxi, Jiangsu Province - China).
Built in 1997 by Zhao Puchu, the former chairman of the Buddhist Association of China.
The grand Buddha acquire its name because of the location on the small Lingshan Mountain. The Mountain was so named by Tang Xuanzang, a Tang-dynasty Buddhist Monk whose pilgrimage trip to India is well-known throughout the Chinese history.
The Lingshan Grand Buddha was built according to the thirty-two features of the Buddha in the sutra. | 413 |
| 12 | 30 Buddhist cultural relics have been returned to the Chinese mainland from Taiwan.
The relics were escorted to Beijing by a delegation of about 200 people from the United Association of Humanistic Buddhism, Chunghua. They were transferred to the National Cultural Heritage Administration on Monday, marking the largest return of lost relics to the mainland from Taiwan in recent years.
Initiated by Hsing Yun, a late Buddhist master, and the Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung, the United Association of Humanistic Buddhism, Chunghua, was founded in 2015 and now includes over 400 temples and organizations across Taiwan.

| 13 | More Chinese youths volunteering at temples as Buddhist culture gains popularity in China.
Chinese youth are flocking to Buddhist temples and monasteries to escape the rat race of contemporary life and get a dose of spiritual comfort. There are currently more than 33,000 Buddhist temples in China.
Youths volunteering at temples is yet another extension of the rising popularity of Buddhist culture in China in the last five years. Amid the worsening “involution” in Chinese society, more youths are choosing “Buddha’s ways” (佛系, learning to live life with Buddhist wisdom) when faced with the pressures of work and life, turning to a lifestyle of contentment regardless of the circumstances.
“When people feel ungrounded and lost, Buddhist culture can have an ameliorating effect, teaching us how to let go and feel free.”

| 15 | Engaged Buddhism: Monks in Bangladesh Offer the Generosity of Iftar to Needy Muslims during Ramadan
Venerable Suddhananda Mahathero (1933–2020), a former abbot of the monastery and former supreme patriarch of the Bangladesh Bauddha Bhikkhu Mahasabha (the Supreme Sangha Council of Bangladesh), began the project as a way to show civic responsibility and generosity toward the local Muslim community, who have supported Dharmarajika since its founding in 1951. The media has praised the iftar initiative at Dharmarajika as a symbol of social harmony between religious communities in a country plagued by religious intolerance and violence against minorities.
In addition to distributing iftar boxes, the monks are engaged in various social-welfare initiatives, such as providing fresh water to approximately 300 individuals daily. The monastery also serves as a home to more than 700 orphans, who receive free education at a school on the premises. | 241 |
| 16 | Sitting for hours on end is not necessary.
Some people think that the longer you can sit, the wiser you must be. I have seen chickens sit on their nests for days on end! Wisdom comes from being mindful in all postures. Your practice should begin as you awaken in the morning. It should continue until you fall asleep. Don’t be concerned about how long you can sit. What is important is only that you keep watchful whether you are working or sitting or going to the bathroom.

| 17 | University of Delhi to Establish Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhism
The initiative comes in response to the growing demand for the revival of Buddhist studies. It aims to foster collaboration between the Delhi University and the ministry to improve educational opportunities for minority communities. This centre, with an estimated cost of around Rs 35 crore, will be constructed on the university campus under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) and the "Buddhist Development Plan" (BDP).
The university will work closely with subject-matter experts to develop curriculum guidelines and course materials for various levels of study, including certificate, diploma, and PhD programmes. These programs will be tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of minority students. Additionally, DU will conduct training programs and workshops to enhance the pedagogical skills and subject knowledge of faculty members teaching Buddhist studies.

| 18 | The Discourse About Sleepiness and Laziness
This is as I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying in the province of Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s park, at Anathapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s park, went up to the Blessed One, bowed, stood to one side, and recited this verse:
“Sleepiness, sloth, and yawning,
not delighting in meditation,
and grogginess after eating:
because of this,
the Noble Path does not shine
for beings in this world.”
The Blessed One:
“Sleepiness, sloth, and yawning,
not delighting in meditation,
and grogginess after eating:
when these are removed with effort,
the Path to Nibbāna is opened.”
