The Basic Fundamental Principles on the Subjects of Tawheed, Fiqh and Aqeedah

Point 54: Water as a Means of Purification
1. Allaah Created Water as a Means of Purification
Question: What did Allaah create water for in relation to purification?
Answer: Allaah created water as a purification that is used to cleanse filth and waste.
Evidence from the Qur’aan
“And We sent down from the sky pure water.”
_
Surah Al-Furqaan: 48
Allaah تعالى also says:
“And He sends down to you from the sky, water with which to purify you.”
_
Surah Al-Anfaal: 11
These verses establish that water is a means of purification.
2. Removing Physical Impurities with Water
According to the majority of scholars, physical impurities are removed using water.
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that when a Bedouin urinated in the Masjid, the Prophet ﷺ instructed that water be poured over the affected area.
_
Ṣaḥeeḥ al-Bukhaari (220).
This hadeeth demonstrates the use of water to remove physical impurities.
When Does Water Remain Pure and Purifying?
Water remains pure and suitable for purification unless an impurity changes its colour, taste, or smell.
However, if the water changes naturally because of substances such as soil, leaves, algae, or minerals, it remains pure and can still be used for purification, provided no impurity has contaminated it in a way that affects its purity.
3. The Two Things Water Removes
Water is used for two types of purification:
1. Ritual impurity (الحدث — Hadath).
2. Physical impurity (النجاسة — Najaasah).
Let us understand the difference between them.
A. Ritual Impurity (الحدث — Hadath)
Definition of Hadath
Linguistically: The Arabic word Hadath means something new or an occurrence.
In Islamic terminology: Hadath refers to a state of ritual impurity that prevents a person from performing certain acts of worship, such as Salaah, until the required purification is performed.
Important distinction: Hadath is not the physical substance itself. For example, urine is a physical substance, whereas the state of ritual impurity resulting from urination is Hadath.
Types of Hadath
There are two types of Hadath:
1. Minor Hadath (الحدث الأصغر)
Examples include:
Passing urine.
Passing stool.
Passing wind.
Deep sleep that invalidates Wudoo’.
Eating camel meat
How is it removed?
By performing Wudoo’ when water is available and can be used.
By performing Tayammum when the conditions permitting it are met, such as when water is unavailable or using it would cause harm.
2. Major Hadath (الحدث الأكبر)
Examples include:
Janaabah resulting from sexual intercourse or ejaculation.
Menstruation (Hayd).
Post-natal bleeding (Nifaas).
How is it removed?
By performing Ghusl when water is available and can be used.
By performing Tayammum when the conditions permitting it are met, such as when water is unavailable or using it would cause harm.
Note: Touching the private parts is subject to scholarly differences regarding whether it invalidate Wudoo’.
B. Physical Impurity (النجاسة — Najaasah)
Definition
Physical impurity refers to a substance considered impure in Islaam.
Examples
Urine.
Stool.
Menstrual blood.
Dog saliva.
How Is Physical Impurity Removed?
The impurity is washed away until its traces are removed.
The relevant traces are its:
Colour.
Smell.
Taste.
The dog saliva is washed from vessels 7 times and one of those times with sand.

| 11 | Their lives remind us that righteousness can flourish in different circumstances. Muslim women should study their examples and strive to embody their virtues according to the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah.
May Allaah enable the Muslim women to emulate these noble women, adorn themselves with faith and excellent character, and attain His pleasure and Paradise.
Compiled by:
Abu Juwayriyah Nūruddīn ibn Sulaymān ibn Hārūn Al-Idi An-Nījīrīyy | 496 |
| 12 | FOUR OF THE GREATEST WOMEN OF PARADISE
Lessons from the Lives of Maryam, Khadeejah, Faatimah and Aasiyah
It was narrated from ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas رضي الله عنهما that the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ drew four lines and asked, “Do you know why I have drawn these lines?”
They replied, “No.” He said, “The best of the women of Paradise are four: Maryam bint ‘Imraan, Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid, Faatimah bint Muhammad, and Aasiyah bint Muzaahim.”
Transmitted by Imaam Ahmad (no. 2957) and authenticated by Shaykh Muqbil ibn Haadee al-Waadi‘ee رحمه الله in As-Saheeh al-Musnad (no. 664).
Benefits and Lessons
1. Allaah Favours Whom He Wills
Allaah, the Most Glorified, favours some of His creation over others through His perfect wisdom and justice. These four noble women attained an exceptionally high rank, teaching us that true excellence lies in faith, righteousness, and obedience to Allaah.
Chastity and Devotion
Maryam, the mother of ‘Eesaa عليه السلام, was praised by Allaah for guarding her chastity and being among the devoutly obedient.
Allaah says:
“And Maryam (Mary), the daughter of ‘Imraan, who guarded her chastity; and We breathed into (the sleeve of her shirt or her garment) through Our Rooh [i.e. Jibreel (Gabriel)], and she testified to the truth of the Words of her Lord and His Scriptures, and she was of the Qaaniteen (i.e. obedient to Allaah).”
— Soorah at-Tahreem (66:12).
When Jibreel عليه السلام appeared to her in the form of a well-proportioned man, she sought refuge in Allaah from him. Her example teaches Muslim women the importance of chastity, modesty, and protecting their dignity.
Supporting the Truth
Khadeejah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, believed in him, supported him with her wealth, and comforted him during difficult times.
The Prophet ﷺ gave her glad tidings of a house in Paradise, wherein there would be neither clamour nor fatigue. (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim.)
She sacrificed greatly in supporting the truth and reassuring the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ. Her example teaches women the value of sincere support, generosity, patience, and comforting words.
Faith and Family
Faatimah was the beloved daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, the wife of ‘Alee رضي الله عنه, and the mother of al-Hasan and al-Husayn رضي الله عنهما.
Her noble lineage was a blessing, alongside her own virtues. Her life reminds us of the importance of faith, patience, devotion to one's household, and loving what the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ loved.
Steadfastness
Aasiyah was the wife of Fir‘awn, a tyrant who arrogantly claimed lordship and oppressed the Children of Israa'eel. Yet she believed in Allaah and remained steadfast despite her circumstances.
Allaah says:
“My Lord! Build for me a home with You in Paradise, and save me from Fir‘awn (Pharaoh) and his work, and save me from the people who are Zaalimoon (polytheists, wrongdoers and disbelievers in Allaah).”
— Soorah at-Tahreem (66:11)
Despite living with a powerful tyrant, her heart longed for Paradise. Her example teaches us that faith must not be sacrificed for worldly status, luxury, or the approval of others.
6. Lessons for Muslim Women
These four women exemplify noble qualities: Maryam in chastity, Khadeejah in support and sacrifice, Faatimah in family devotion, and Aasiyah in steadfastness. | 484 |
| 13 | 🌊 Swimming against the tides 🌊
Sometimes, doing what is right means standing against what everyone else is doing.
When immodesty becomes fashionable, modesty may seem strange.
When disobedience becomes normalised, obedience may seem extreme.
When falsehood becomes popular, the truth may seem unpopular.
But Allaah has already reminded us:
وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِي الْأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
“And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allaah.”
_
Qur'aan 6:116
The majority is not always the measure of truth. Popularity is not proof of righteousness. And being outnumbered does not mean being wrong.
So, before following the crowd, ask yourself:
Am I following the truth, or simply following people?
Because our ultimate goal is not to fit in with the world. It is to seek the pleasure of Allaah.
May Allaah grant us the courage to hold firmly to the truth, even when we stand alone. Aameen.

| 14 | According to Surah Aal ‘Imraan (3:85), what is the outcome for whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam? | 537 |
| 15 | Which of the following is a characteristic of the religion of Islaam? | 471 |
| 16 | What is the meaning of Islaam? | 429 |
| 17 | This refers to the path of Islaam that a person follows in this worldly life: the way of obedience to Allaah and His Messenger ﷺ.
It is the path of those whom Allaah has favoured: the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous.
“And whoso obeys Allaah and the Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allaah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqoon (those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه), the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!”
Surah An-Nisaa’: 69
B. Siraat Hissi (The Actual Bridge)
This refers to the actual bridge over Hell that people will cross on the Day of Resurrection.
The notes connect a person's path in this worldly life with their crossing over the Siraat in the Hereafter: a person's faith and deeds matter, and Allaah's judgement is just.

| 18 | Lesson Note 10: Aqeedah
Book Title:
The Basic Fundamental Principles on the Subjects of Tawheed, Fiqh and Aqeedah
Author: Abuu Abdur-Raḥman Yahya Ibn ‘Ali Al-Hajuree
Point 4: What Is Your Religion?
Question: What is your religion?
Answer: My religion is the true religion of Islaam.
“Verily, the only true religion in the sight of Allaah is Islaam.”
Surah Aal ‘Imraan: 19
Allaah تعالى also says:
“He is the One who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth.”
Surah At-Tawbah: 33
And Allaah تعالى says:
“And whoever looks for a religion other than Islaam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.”
Surah Aal ‘Imraan: 85
2. The Meaning of Deen (Religion)
The word Deen has several related meanings, including:
Obedience: Submitting to and obeying Allaah.
Recompense: The reward or punishment for one's deeds.
Sacred Law and Creed: The beliefs, commands, and laws that Allaah has legislated.
3. The Meaning of Islaam
Islaam means:
1. Submission to Allaah through Tawheed — singling Allaah out in worship.
2. Obedience to Allaah through worship and righteous actions.
3. Disavowal of Shirk and its people — rejecting Shirk and not accepting it as a way of worship.
4. Characteristics of the Religion of Islaam
A. It Is Based Upon Revelation
The religion of Islaam is based upon evidence from the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah, not corrupt opinions or flawed reasoning that contradicts revelation.
B. It Is Free from Innovation and Superstition
Islaam is not based upon religious innovations (Bid‘ah) or superstitions.
As discussed in the previous lesson, the notes mention two categories of Bid‘ah:
1. Bid‘ah Mukaffirah: An innovation that constitutes disbelief.
2. Bid‘ah Mufassiqah: An innovation that constitutes sin without, in itself, taking a person out of the fold of Islaam.
More details will come on this topic, in shaa Allaah
C. It Is Practised Through Obedience
A Muslim practises Islaam by:
Fulfilling its pillars, obligations, and recommended acts according to their ability.
Avoiding forbidden actions.
Striving to follow the Qur’aan and Sunnah.
5. The Two Meanings of Islaam
A. The General Meaning of Islaam
In its general meaning, Islaam refers to the religion of submission to Allaah preached by all the Messengers.
All the Messengers called their people to worship Allaah alone and submit to Him.
B. The Specific Meaning of Islaam
In its specific meaning, Islaam refers to the final religion revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The message of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is for all mankind, and after his coming, it is obligatory upon those who receive his message to believe in him and follow what he was sent with.
Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
«وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَا يَسْمَعُ بِي أَحَدٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ يَهُودِيٌّ وَلَا نَصْرَانِيٌّ ثُمَّ يَمُوتُ وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِالَّذِي أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ إِلَّا كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّارِ»
“By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, but does not affirm his belief in that with which I have been sent and dies in this state (of disbelief), he shall be but one of the Companions of Hell-Fire.”
Ṣaḥeeḥ Muslim: 153
Islaam Abrogates Previous Religions
The specific religion revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final revelation. It abrogates the previous revealed religious laws, and Allaah does not accept any religion after the sending of Muhammad ﷺ other than Islaam.
6. The Two Types of Siraat
The notes mention two types of Siraat:
A. Siraat Ma‘nawi (The Abstract or Spiritual Path) | 338 |
| 19 | What did the Prophet ﷺ teach through his statement, “Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me”? | 507 |
| 20 | Which of the following is an example of a worldly matter rather than a innovation bid'ah in itself? | 491 |
