All praise is due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. To proceed: May Allah preserve you, dear brothers, and bless you. There is an extremely serious issue that deserves attention: passing judgments on specific individuals by saying, “This person is Ikhwani,” “This person is Suroori,” “This person is Sufi,” and the like. Judging particular individuals is not a light matter at all. It is not correct for someone to ask, “Is this person Ikhwani?” as though the answer is simple and people are divided merely based on whether a person is Ikhwani or not. This is a misconception that must be avoided. The righteous predecessors were extremely cautious when speaking about specific individuals. Imam al-Bukhari رحمه الله, for example, would sometimes say regarding a person who had serious issues, “There is something to be considered regarding him” (fīhi naẓar), and would not go beyond that. This is because such matters can enter into the realm of backbiting, and backbiting is only permitted for scholars to the extent of necessity, and only for the purpose of warning people from harm and other reasons the scholars mentioned. Furthermore, the issue of judging individuals is different from the issue of warning against them. A person may be warned against because he possesses certain traits of the people of innovation—such as forms of Sufism, Shi‘ism, or other innovations—yet this does not necessarily mean that he himself is to be labelled an innovator. Rather, the warning may be given so that people are not influenced by the innovation that he carries. Likewise, this matter differs from the issue of being unaware of the reality of a particular individual. In such cases, the correct approach is to say: “Allah knows best regarding his condition.” Allah, the Exalted, says: «“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—about all those one will be questioned.” (Al-Isrāʾ 17:36)» This is therefore a very important matter. If a scholar has spoken regarding a particular individual, then it is sufficient to convey the statement of that scholar without adding to it, so that trials and discord are not inflamed. And Allah knows best. May Allah send His peace, blessings, and favour upon His worshipper and Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all of his Companions.
