WEEKLY DEVOTION: 19 OCTOBER 2026 | That One Step To Receiving God’s Miracle In my devotion last month, we contemplated on God
WEEKLY DEVOTION: 19 OCTOBER 2026 | That One Step To Receiving God’s Miracle In my devotion last month, we contemplated on God’s Word in 2 Kings 6:1-11 and the miracle that was needed. In today’s contemplation, let us see that even though God had created the miracle through Elisha—there was still one step the man had to take before he could fully receive that miracle.   2 Kings 6: 5-11 “ 5 But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water, and he cried out, “Alas, my master! It was borrowed.” 6 Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there and made the iron float. 7 And he said, “Take it up.” So he reached out his hand and took it.”   Let us see that although the miraculous raising of the sunken axe head had happened, the axe head was still out there in the water, floating. Even at that point, after the axe head had miraculously risen—the wood handle however still remained separated from its axe head. That axe had thus not been wholly restored and the man had not fully benefitted from that miracle yet.   So, Elisha instructed the man, “Take it up.”  It was only when he acted on that instruction—that he began to receive and benefit from that miracle.   At one time or another, many of us needed or will need a miracle from God. In some instances, receiving that miracle may not require us to do anything further. But if God instructs us to take a further step—then we must do so to receive and benefit from His miracles.   I recall the testimony about a man who went forward during an altar call for healing. As the evangelist prayed, he was prompted to ask the man—how was the man’s relationship with his father? The man was immediately angered and replied that he was there to ask for healing from chronic backache and not for anything to do with his father. When the evangelist gently persisted, the man repeated with increased indignance that his request did not have anything to do with his father; and his father had died years ago.   The evangelist pointed out gently to the man that though his father had died years ago, his anger against his father was still in him. The evangelist assured the man that he would pray for the miracle of healing. But he urged the man to act on any instruction the Lord might give him. The next day, the man felt prompted to write a letter to his late father and to post it, even with no address on the envelope. The man wrote the letter to his father, forgiving his father. As he dropped the letter into the mail box, he felt his heart set free and his backache disappeared!         Friends, if you have been praying for a miracle and the Lord has given you an instruction—whether directly to you, or through a counsellor, a pastor or a friend—may you act on His instruction and receive the miracle He has been wanting you to receive. The Lord be with you and bless you! Amen. Rev Joseph Goh

COR WEEKLY PRAYER POINTERS | 19-24 OCTOBER 2026 Pray for the World: Ongoing Conflicts Pray for God's mercy upon the people of Yemen, Ukraine and Gaza, where ongoing conflicts continue to bring immense suffering, displacement and loss of life. Pray especially for vulnerable civilians, including children and the elderly, and for humanitarian organisations working under increasingly difficult conditions. Ask God to grant wisdom and courage to world leaders to pursue peace through dialogue and reconciliation, and to open pathways for humanitarian assistance to reach those in desperate need. Pray For Singapore: Haze Singapore has experienced a significant deterioration in air quality with haze from forest and peatland fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan affecting the island. The authorities have brought forward the distribution of N95 masks. The haze poses particular risks to children, elderly people and those with respiratory illnesses. Pray for God's mercy and relief from the worsening haze affecting Singapore and neighbouring countries. Pray for the protection of vulnerable groups, especially young children, the elderly, those with respiratory conditions, and people who work outdoors. Remember also communities directly affected by the forest fires. Ask God to grant wisdom and resolve to the governments of Singapore and neighbouring countries to work together in containing the fires, addressing the underlying causes of recurring haze, and promoting responsible stewardship of God's creation. Pray for the Church: My Saviour’s Church (MSC) Uphold in prayer Vicar Revd Charles Tewer and his leadership team. Pray for unity over the Tamil and English congregation as they work together for the Gospel. Pray for renewed zeal and passion to share the Good News with the communities and their loved ones. Pray for Chapel of the Resurrection – Chaplaincy Work in SAJC Pray for our chaplaincy ministry in SAJC. Uplift Pastor Wendy Yong and the chaplaincy team in prayer. Ask God for tenacity, resilience and faith as they continue to engage the students and staff on the ground. Pray for more workers and volunteers to join the team in the harvest field. As the team plans for 2027, ask God for faithfulness in the ongoing initiatives as well as wisdom and faith for new opportunities to share the Gospel. Pray for the Sick: Pray for COR members who are unwell physically, mentally or emotionally. Pray in particular for Chan Chee Har, Chew Hai Joo, Khoo Poh Tay, Steven Lee, Edwin Low, John Suan, Gong Wooi Mau and Khoo Hwa Chiang. WEEKLY DEVOTION: 12 OCTOBER 2026 | Worship Must Cost Us Something 2 Samuel 24:21-24   21 And Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, in order to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be averted from the people.” 22 Then Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Here are the oxen for the burnt offering and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. 23 All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.” 24 But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels7 of silver.     I doubt many people will disagree with me if I were to say that we live in a society that highly values convenience and comfort. People with means are willing to pay huge premiums for convenience and comfort – homes near MRT stations, cars, business class flights, air-conditioned restaurants, expensive furniture etc. Just to be sure, there is nothing wrong with desiring convenience and comfort. However, we must be careful not to allow this mindset to ‘cheapen’ our worship to God.   In 2 Samuel 24:21-24, we learn a very powerful lesson about ‘cheap’ vs. ‘costly’ worship. In this passage of Scripture, we are told that King David wanted to build an altar to sacrifice burnt offerings to God. We are then told that Araunah offered to give a piece of his land for King David to build the altar. While many people would gladly take up this generous offer, David refused; his reply to Araunah was – ‘I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.’   David’s reply was remarkable and inspiring. He understood that true worship comes from the heart. Worship that cost us nothing becomes insincere and worthless worship to God. Just as no one would give a supermarket freebie to a friend as a birthday gift, we must not give God our leftovers.   Friends, what do we bring to God in worship week after week? Do we give God our cheap and worthless leftovers? Or do we give Him something costly?   Perhaps as we come to Church this weekend, we can ask ourselves this question, ‘what costly offering can I bring to God in worship?’ It can be simple things such as: - Skip the late-night soccer match so that we can be alert for the worship service. - Wake up early and be on time for service. - Skip the nice meal and offer the money to the Lord. - Offer to fetch a neighbor to church. - Step up to serve in a ministry.   Whatever form it takes, the Lord sees our hearts. He is pleased and glorified when we bring Him offerings that are worthy of Him and costly to us. Ps Kelvin Chua

Pray that amid the uncertainties facing our world, they may find renewed hope, purpose and confidence in the future.   Pray For Singapore: Haze The National Environment Agency (NEA) warned lastFriday that the 24-hour PSI could exceed 200 and enter the Very Unhealthy range, as smoke haze from southern Sumatra and Kalimantan continue to be blown towards Singapore. Pray for clean air and relief from the haze. Lift up especially the vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, outdoor workers, and those with respiratory conditions. Pray for the governments of Singapore and neighbouring countries to work together effectively in addressing the causes of transboundary haze, including preventing and controlling forest and peatland fires.   Pray for the Church: Marine Parade Christian Centre(MPCC) Uphold in prayer Vicar Cn Terry Wong and his leadership team. WEEKLY DEVOTION: 6 OCTOBER 2026 | Perseverance Luke 18:1-8 “And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterwards he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”   Perseverance can be a difficult virtue to cultivate. The very idea of it necessitates difficulty and challenge. It can only be forged in the furnace of adversity, setbacks, and challenge. It naturally requires much effort, patience and tenacity in order for us to develop it.   On the contrary, it is so easy and tempting to simply give up or become discouraged and disheartened.  Drop a few days of our quiet time, put on a few kilos, or handle a difficult person and we are often tempted to just give up trying altogether.   However, Jesus’ parable of the persistent widow exhorts us otherwise. It calls for us to have that steely perseverance and press on in spite of discouragements and setbacks. It encourages us to continue doing what is right even though the odds are against us. I like the way one author puts it,   Perseverance isn’t about pressing on with the impossible. Perseverance is about pressing on with the possible no matter how impossible it might seem. What is that area that God desires for us to persevere in?   Is it our prayer life, or evangelism, or our efforts against sin?   Press on!   Rev. Dr. Jeremy-Joe Tan
