I now understand why us "Pentes" close our eyes when worshiping and praying. Cause nothing we see; the church, the manner of praying and worshipping... none of it says, "Heavenly" or "Beautiful" so since your sight isn't reminding you of God, you shut it out to try and think of God. I think if it was possible to do the singing, praying and hearing, with my ears covered too, I would. I grew up in a Lutheran church but my family moved a lot so when I was in high school, I started going to a Full gospel church near me because my friend also went there. I've been to other churches before but let's just summarize those days as some of the worst times of my life. ጓደኛዬ፦ "ምን ሆነ?" ስትለኝ፣ "መዝሙሩ ጩኸት ነው፤ ቸርቹ ቤዝመንት ውስጥ ነው፤ ሰዎቹ ጮክ ብለው በማላውቀው ቋንቋ ይናገራሉ። በማንኛውም ሰዓት፦ ከፊትሽ፣ ከጎንሽ፣ ከኋላሽ ሰው ሊወድቅ ስለሚችል፣ አንቺም ለራስሽ ትሰግያለሽ። ቤተ ክርስቲያን የምመጣው በየሳምንቱ 'ሰይጣን ይኖርብኝ ይሆን?' ብዬ ጠይቄ ለመሄድ አይደለም" የመሳሰሉትን ማለት፣ ተራና የሚያሳፍር ሰበብ መስሎኝ ነበር። ሌሎች ተስማምቷቸው እኔን ከረበሸኝ፣ ችግሩ ከእኔ መሆን አለበት ብዬ እኔም ለመስማማት ሞከርኩ። 'ምን ሆነ?' 'ምን ጎደለ?'... I went to an Orthodox Church with a friend on two separate occasions. እና የጎደለውን እዛ አየሁት። I wanted my other friend to see it too. In Sunday school, I remember being told we close our eyes when praying because we don't want to be distracted by what's going on, and so I, like many others, applied that to worship too; trying to give my full attention to God. But what if we didn't have to try? What if everywhere you looked, things were so separate from the world, you can't help but think of God? The ceilings, the windows, the manner of singing, the movements... what if everything was worshiping? What if everything you saw and heard made you seek God? I think we wouldn't have to close our eyes then.
