That's what a hallmark is for. It's a stamped mark on the metal that certifies purity.
In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) runs the hallmarking system. Any jeweller selling hallmarked gold has to register with BIS and send pieces to an assay centre — a lab that tests the metal and stamps it if it passes.
The stamp has four parts:
- BIS logo (a triangle inside a shape)
- Purity in fineness (916 means 22 karat, 999 means 24 karat)
- Assay centre mark (identifies which lab tested it)
- Jeweller's identification mark
Here's the catch: the stamp can be faked. So BIS added a six-digit alphanumeric code called HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification). That code links to a specific piece in the BIS database.
How to check:
Go to BIS website → Consumer corner → Verify hallmark.
Type in the six-digit code stamped on your jewellery.
If it's real, you'll see the jeweller's name, the centre that tested it, and the purity.
Takes two minutes. Do it before you walk out of the shop.
