One of the answers is Consistency.
Showing up on days when you don’t feel like it. Sacrificing festivals, outings and meet-ups because shayad weekly target abhi pending hai.
For a long time, it may feel like nothing is happening.
We all know the story of Chinese bamboo, which shows little visible growth for many years, before shooting up rapidly once its roots are established.
So, Keep showing up in those doubtful days. The roots are growing.

This is perhaps the most difficult night of all,
Most of the answers suddenly look horrible when you revisit them. Now I should focus on Next Year’s Mains can be the feeling here.😅
“Could have written this better..How did I miss that data?..”
Upar se GS-3 ka mammoth syllabus, aching body and restless soul. 😅
Trust me, your paper probably didn’t go as badly as it feels tonight. This is the worst possible time to evaluate your performance. Don’t do the post-mortem now.
You just have to hang in there. As I said earlier, Mains is as much about managing yourself.
✅ Quickly revise GS-4 - the examples, quotes, case studies and diagrams you’ve already prepared.
✅ For GS-3, don’t try to conquer the entire syllabus tonight. If you try to complete it, agle 48 hours bhi kum padenge. Be strategic here.
Prioritise Security + Agriculture + DM first. Revise your data, recommendations, examples and frameworks.
The arguments will often remain generic..please don’t worry about it.
Once you are done with this, Can focus on other areas.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS if you are still revising and scribbling in this final time. There are many aspirants who have already given up before the exam. Trust me, there are many.
This is where perseverance gets tested and you have already crossed that hurdle.(The unwritten part of the UPSC syllabus.😅)
The coming few days will be a roller-coaster ride. No matter how tiring or overwhelming it gets, I can tell you one thing with certainty-
You will never forget the experience of writing Mains.
You cleared one of the toughest Prelims and earned yourself these 27 hours. Remind this to yourself when that aching hand doesn’t allow you to write anymore.
And now, it’s NOT about knowledge. It’s about managing yourself during those 27 hours.
And perhaps the toughest part - the nights between papers, specially GS-1,2,3 and 4.
You may come back disappointed after a paper. You may replay those “not so good” answers in your head.😅
Don’t carry yesterday’s paper into tomorrow’s examination hall.
I have seen people cry after the Essay paper and still clear Mains. That’s how subjective this examination can be.
So don’t evaluate your paper before UPSC does it.
Just hang in there-as you have till now.
Manage your time. Manage your answers.
Most importantly, manage yourself.

Received many messages regarding Essay in my DMs, so answering some common queries here.
I have scored 130+ in one of my attempts, and these are a few things I would like you to keep in mind while preparing -
✅ Prepare thematically.
No matter how the quote is framed, it usually connects to a broader theme. Build theme-wise content, rather than preparing isolated quotes.
Example - Theme on Responding to adversity and Never giving up, Inner-Peace,Contentment and Happiness, Evolution and Journey of Transformation etc etc.
✅ Content may remain the same; perspective and presentation must change.
You will inevitably use Buddha, Dr. Kalam, Gandhi, Mandela, Japan, 1991 Economic Reforms etc etc. Where and why you use them makes the difference.
✅ Don’t over-engineer uniqueness.
The examiner shouldn’t have to decode your argument.
Clarity > > forced novelty.
Make your ideas easy to follow. The examiner is less likely to re-read your argument, so make things easy for him.
✅ Don’t impose quotes or poems.
Just because you have memorised them DOES NOT mean they belong everywhere. Integration should be organic and free-flowing, not mechanical and imposed, merely for “shock value”.
(I will explain this separately - it comes from personal mistake)
✅ GS-linked themes can be prioritised.
If a GS-based theme appears and you have command over it, you can consider prioritising it. Familiarity gives you greater content security and dimensional depth.
✅ Your introduction matters disproportionately.
If the introduction clearly conveys that you have understood the core idea of the quote, half the job is done. Sets the tone for the Examiner.
✅ Bring contemporary relevance.
Use recent issues and emerging trends to establish contemporary linkage like Increasing Road-rage, Attention Economy etc etc. Don’t just mention them; connect them to your central argument
Use daily anecdotes that we notice across platforms be it a Women attending Father’s funeral via video call or American lady crying when her Indian Neighbours were leaving.
✅ Don’t turn the Essay into Ethics paper.
Avoid dumping Ethics examples into every paragraph just to demonstrate “value addition”.
Build the argument first; use examples to support it.
An Essay isn’t a collection of examples.
Lastly - Keep the central idea intact (Stick to the topicas as they say), explore it from multiple dimensions and hold it together by a coherent argument.

| 20 | The Final Lap (Last week before CSE Mains)
John Steinbeck writes in the Classic - East of Eden,
“And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.”
This comes at a time when Abra is struggling with the burden of being an idealised version of herself.
I think there is a lesson here for Mains.
At this point, DO NOT idealise your preparation.
Don’t get stuck in the guilt loop:
“Prelims ke baad time waste kar diya..Galat Strategy follow kar liya..I could have done better..Next year Pakka Acche se..”😅
I have spoken to Many Mains-appearing candidates in the last few days. Different preparation, different problems-but almost everyone is feeling the heat.
So, here is what you got to do-
✅ Stop comparing your preparation with an imaginary version of yourself.
Don’t try to remember every committee, report, data or every example you have read.
✅ Perfectionism is a terrible last-week strategy.
Play your strengths. Just Manage your weaknesses. Don’t negotiate with both equally.
✅ The final week is all about removing the noise between what you know and what you can actually put on paper.
So, Don’t burden yourself to be “perfect”. Just be “good”, in the last week.
Revise GS, Brainstorm Essay and Scribble Few Points to be in that writing zone.
Trust me, “It always seems impossible, untill it’s done.”
So, just manage yourself in the last week.🙂
