Why Has India Never Built an Apple, Microsoft or Google?
Someone asked me:
“India has produced some of the best technology brains in the world. So why haven’t we built an Apple, Microsoft or Google of our own?”
The answer, I believe, is surprisingly simple.
We started with technology. They started with the customer.
Apple, Microsoft and Google began by asking:
What does the customer need? What problem can we solve? What experience can we create?
Then they worked backward to find the technology needed to deliver it.
In India, we have often done the reverse:
Build the technology first. Then find a customer for it.
We celebrate engineering.
We celebrate cost efficiency.
We celebrate technical competence.
But Customer Experience often becomes the last priority.
And that is the fundamental difference.
Technology is a tool.
The real innovation begins when you understand what people want before you decide what technology to build.
India has no shortage of brilliant brains.
Perhaps what we have lacked is not intelligence—
but the obsession with the customer.
And until we move from Technology First → Customer First, we may continue producing great technologists while others build the world's great technology companies.
