Ethiopia's power sector continues to expand.
The country's installed electricity generation capacity has now exceeded 9,730 MW, driven mainly by renewable energy, with hydropower remaining the dominant source. During the past fiscal year, nearly 490,000 new customers were connected to the national grid, bringing total grid users to 5.82 million.
Looking ahead, Ethiopia's newly announced 25-year electricity master plan projects peak power demand to grow to 39,327 MW by 2049.
To meet this demand, the country plans to build 128 new substations, strengthen the national grid, and expand off-grid electricity access to support industrialization, urbanization, and economic growth.

The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has unveiled a 25-year National Power Distribution Master Plan (2024–2049), requiring an estimated
$30.65 billion

The plan aims to improve the reliability, efficiency, and quality of electricity services while meeting Ethiopia's rapidly growing energy demand. It also includes the modernization of 1,100 feeder lines, 183 substations, and nearly 79,000 km of medium-voltage distribution lines, laying the foundation for a smarter and more resilient power grid.
The initiative was financed by the World Bank and is currently undergoing stakeholder consultation before implementation.
