Repost from GEOGRAPHY OPTIONAL_ ENSO ACADEMY
Through the experience of evaluating hundreds of answers over the past three years and having personal discussions with around 50+ Aspirants, I want to share one of the major mistakes I observed aspirants are doing unintentionally i.e., Aspirants are rushing or so eager to write answers, without having enough patience to give emphasis to each word in the question, so as to understand the maximum closest and possible demand of the question.
By doing this Aspirants are writing answers, but not answering the Questions. The consequence will be getting below average score.
And intentionally they are trying to cover up this below average performance by decorating answer to look attractive. Without understanding and addressing the demand of question, what help do decoration do, you only have to ask yourself.
Answer will have value and get rewarded by examiner only when it respects and follows question demand, as how important a thread is for garland of flowers. Question demand is such a thread, your answer will have value according to how closely you understood the question demand and how strongly and efficiently you articulated your answer on that thread.
Not only awareness is required in Preparation but also it is equally important while reading questions.
Learn with Awareness and Write with Awareness, so that you can get your best possible outcome in line with your potential.

The following are few of the major mistakes done by aspirants who fail repeatedly and score less in Mains, unknowingly and without Awareness. (This also applies to those who fail in the prelims and those who are preparing now and committing the same mistakes.) Take the below mistakes as sign boards to check your preparation journey efficiency.
1. Not analysing the UPSC GS Mains Syllabus and Previous Year Questions. These aspirants Prepare for Years and Years ,but rarely do they try to understand the Syllabus fully and get an idea of interlinking, overlapping Concepts given.
2. They have all the Material (new and old) which ever is trending in the market and Telegram Channels. But Rarely they complete atleast 50% of that material. Just accumulation, due to initial enthusiasm they read one material for two or three days , by that time a new material will uploaded in telegram which claims to best, so just get drifting to diverse and inefficient sources.
3. Unnecessarily putting a heap of garbage of materials upon one's Preparation. It's also same like food , if you take in a limited and sufficient manner it enriches you , or else it destroys health.
4. Rarely they work consistently to brainstorm Previous Year Mains Questions it may be GS or Optional. They always want Model answers from outside. And also if someone says, so called test series is good, these people simply join and waste their money without using the test series completely.
5. They won't maintain consistency in writing answers or tests. Attitude of easily giving up after one or two answers or tests if they receive some critical remarks from others or else if they not able to finish the targets.
6. They read static seperately from multiple materials, notes from so called enrichment classes given by xyz institutions and Current Issues seperately from either news papers or any website or magazine or enrichment classes/notes. But hardly apply their thinking in linking and updating static with current issues.
7. Most of them due to lack of planning waste 2-3 months time after prelims result or mains result, which otherwise can be used effectively for next attempt. Here motivation comes in patches , 3 months Hardwork, 1-2 months or more of disappointment, again hardwork.
8. Joining Test Series with blind assumption of test series is one point solution to get rank. But if one is not aware of why he needs to join test series and how one needs to utilise test series and mentor to the maximum, then it's just waste of time and money.
There may be few aspirants who knew all these things and prepare well ,but still fail due to their specific reasons , it's not about them.
It is about the majority who do Preparation in ignorance & without Awareness.
If You are Failing then the reasons may be , Lack of Awareness about Exam Syllabus, about Previous Questions , about Yourself, Lack of Practice , Self Analysis, Over Dependence on Outside factors like institutions, materials , faculty notes, etc.
Ask yourself, Analyse your preparation to Know your reasons....
The above may or may not be applicable to you , but if you do your own self analysis you will realise your mistakes.
Do Prepare with Awareness and value your hardwork, time and money.
Be Consistent and Clear.
Start your new phase of Preparation by removing the veil of ignorance present in your Preparation by allowing light of Awareness.
All the Best 👍

Never hold back from writing an answer if all that paralyzes you is fear of making a mistake.
If you make a mistake there is a chance that you will learn how to improve your answer next time.
If you never write an answer, you will never know what changes you need to make.
Each answer gives you an opportunity to make a mistake. It is the sum of those mistakes and the afterward realisation that will make you write better and better.
Somewhere it has to start , So start it here and now .
Be Happy to make all mistakes here itself rather than doing them in the UPSC Mains Examination.
Do Mistakes and Accept them , Learn from them and Evolve beyond them.
All the Best👍

What UPSC is expecting from Aspirants through Mains Exam.
""The Main Examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.""
The nature and standard of questions in the General Studies papers (Paper II to Paper V) will be such that a well-educated person will be able to answer them without any specialized study. ""The questions will be such as to test a candidate’s general awareness of a variety of subjects, which will have relevance for a career in Civil Services. The questions are likely to test the candidate’s basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyze, and take a view on conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives and demands. The candidates must give relevant, meaningful and succinct answers.""
The scope of the syllabus for optional subject papers (Paper VI and Paper VII) for the examination is broadly of the honours degree 1evel i.e. a level higher than the bachelors’ degree and lower than the masters’ degree. In the case of Engineering, Medical Science and law, the level corresponds to the bachelors’ degree.
SOURCE: UPSC CSE NOTIFICATION
Do assess yourself that, is really your preparation is in line with UPSC requirement or do you focusing on accumulating heaps of information and memorizing them?
UPSC wants unique intellectual traits and depth of conceptual understanding,
Just ask your self what you are doing!
Whether you are mugging up and accumulating information or developing your conceptual understanding and intellectual traits.

UPSC CSE 2027
Now the main question, How to Prepare Geography Optional.
By considering all those above mistakes, the following ingredients may make some difference depending on aspirants acceptance and belief.
1. Preparation with Awareness:
(a) Emphasising on thorough Conceptual Understanding from Standard Textbooks ( standard books may not contain complete syllabus, where ever required need to refer other materials and internet)
(b) UPSC Given Geography Optional Syllabus -Understanding and Keeping it as ultimate reference at all stages of preparation
(c) Topic Wise Previous Year Questions , Keeping them as benchmark to check your conceptual understanding and sufficiency of your source ( be it standard books or material) (rather than blindly wasting time on reading inappropriate content or having shallow understanding of concepts, it's better if you check through PYQ, then you can make needed changes effectively)
2. Systems Approach to Preparation:
(a) Treating Total syllabus as a System and syllabus topics as elements of that system representing different domains of our life , and knowing that those elements are interlinked in one or the other way with each other directly or indirectly.
(b) also knowing that some of those elements ( syllabus topics) are dynamic, means they have contemporary dimension ( so while reading a topic itself , trying to cover contemporary developments regarding that topic)
3. Having a clean mind ( without misconceptions and illusions about Optional) and open mind ( ready to accept mistakes and to get adapted to new approach)
4. Knowing that perfection is a myth be it about completing entire syllabus or writing so called best answers. Considering the scope of subject, how much you may cover the syllabus, there is a huge chance to get few questions ( 4-5 ) from unknown or little known topics. Accept this, so that you can know limitations and focus on what you can do.
5. Targeted Answer Writing: Writing Answers, need to keep one thing in mind , purpose of writing answers is to know what kind of mistakes you are doing while understanding question demand and presenting the content in a meaningful way as per question demand. It first starts with imperfections only , sometimes even complete wrong answers do come, but if you focus on what is missing and where and why it's missing, then you can work on those aspects. So that relative perfection and relative good answers will become an outcome of your efforts.
7. Clarity and Consolidation: Know what you are doing and whether it have anything to contribute towards your performance in optional exam.

UPSC CSE 2027
How to Prepare Geography Optional ?
Before knowing how to prepare, let's look into how not to prepare ( unfortunately majority of aspirants are preparing like this )
The most common features/ways of wrong approach to preparation.. are as follows
1. Blindly mugging up and reading, revising same xyz notes and thinking they are preparing optional so well
2. Not understanding Syllabus, as rather than syllabus putting trust on some faculty and their notes
3. Focusing more on some institutes test series and model answers, rather than understanding previous year questions.
4. Neglecting ( some don't even buy standard books, rather buy all the material in market) necessary standard books.
5. Not having contemporary dimension regarding syllabus topics, this happens as a result of following some odd notes ( as they are so busy in reading and revising that notes, like all questions are going to come from that notes itself) .
6. lack of interlinking skills for concepts within chapter, between and among chapters and also between both papers ( as it requires quite the amount of self-efforts and struggle to understand syllabus, no notes will give it artificially).
7. Neglecting Paper-2 and certain portions of Paper-1 , by their imagination that just by reading from the preliminary exam perspective and a little GS mains perspective, they can easily write answers in optional. Don't know how they are missing the logic that if one studies the subject in detail and specifically, then it may help in GS, as Optional syllabus is very detailed and specific.
GS syllabus is very vague and general, how can this vague thing help in writing specific answers.
8. Writing answers, this we need to talk , fixing a format for how to write answers , and reproducing it on paper ( here they don't bother about what question is expecting, they will write what they want to write, like a monarch ) and blindly following the great formula , i.e., placing diagram on each page of answer ( here they don't bother about name of diagram or other details of diagram or its specific relevance to question, all they need is they have to place diagram on each page)
9. From the beginning itself approaching Geography Optional with scepticism, getting influenced by the peer aspirants , that geography is difficult, geography is not giving marks , and if the influence is more , changing to other Optional.
( may be there will be many more mistakes, )
Now , ask yourself "if one is making all or some of the above 9 mistakes", then don't you think he/she is perfectly entitled to claim Geography is difficult and Geography is not giving good marks. Obviously, they will and they can say that.
But is it 100% True?
Is it Subject or is it Aspirants approach to Subject? Responsible for such claims around Geography. Ask yourself before entering the journey of Geography...
An outline of Awareness driven Systems Approach to prepare Geography Optional will be shared in next post.
Thank You.

Sharing some of the common yet costly mistakes aspirants do while attending preliminary test (these may serve as signs to know your own mistakes hidden therein if any).
1. Not reading the question properly, i.e., reading the question briefly or incompletely due to overlooking mindset without due attention to each word in the question , so there is a high chance to misunderstand question demand and wrong choice of answer
2. Not reading options with patience and clarity, like reading one or two options and choosing answer without reading the remaining options , for some questions in general all options seems to be correct but if you observe all options clearly there will be only one answer, to know that one should read all options carefully with enough patience
3. NOT Observing the key words in the question and options like NOT CORRECT , ONLY , ALL , etc. (Misunderstanding of Question Demand , this is a consequence of First and Second mistakes)
4. Taking too much time on few questions and thinking over logically, this happens mostly to those who are unaware of how they are spending their 120 minutes in Exam Hall (Kind of habitual ignorance in time management)
5. Marking wrongly on OMR sheet out of tension (this will happen to those who will hurry to mark all answers on OMR sheet in the last few minutes)
6. Blind Guessing of History or Factual or Current Affairs Questions (without knowing anything about the question if you do blind guessing, there is very less chance for getting correct answer), so don't take risk with these kind of questions , if you know one or the other option in question then only apply your intelligent guess work that too if necessary.
There is an another side to these kind of questions, some of these questions have some basic common sense or knowledge related content, if you observe/read the Question Language and Options, then those questions can be marked correctly. For this one should again have patience and read Question and Options completely without prior assumption and judgement about the Question.
7. Going with a pre-mindset about attempting 'n' number of questions , this one has to decide after reading the whole paper, based on his/her solving capacity and the difficulty of the Question Paper.
It's never late, rather than sleeping now in ignorance and lamenting after failure, it's better to Awake now and do intense self analysis to unearthen your hidden habitual mistakes.
SO GET READY TO FIND OUT YOUR OWN MISTAKES , AND RECTIFY THEM BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. MOCK TESTS ARE GREAT FRIENDS IN THIS PURPOSE TO A SINCERE ASPIRANT.
NO TEST SERIES QUESTIONS WILL BE REPLICATED IN UPSC PAPER AS IT IS , ITS ONLY YOUR MISTAKES AND YOUR ABILITY TO FIND AND RECTIFY THEM THROUGH TEST SERIES, WILL DECIDE WHETHER YOU WILL BE IN THE CUT OFF LIST OR NOT.
AND DO NOT NEGLECT CSAT, DO MINIMUM 3-4 FULL LENGTH TESTS AND APPLY INTENSE SELF ANALYSIS METHOD HERE TOO.
REMEMBER UNREAL FEAR OR NEGLIGENCE DUE TO UNREAL CONFIDENCE, SURELY TROUBLE ONE, WITH RESPECT TO CSAT. BE IN REALITY, BEFORE CSAT BECOMES A TROUBLE.
If you are sincere and dedicated real aspirant and facing any issue with Prelims and in need of help, can ask for help @Interior_Paz. But please seek help only after you removed your ego cover &when you are ready to give your best.

Even as a pinch of salt in fresh milk, ignorance will ruin your efforts in UPSC attempt after attempt.
You must remove the illusionary misconceptions that you have gathered from Market and YouTube to cover up your fear of failure. Do Preparation with Awareness using Syllabus, PYQ and Self-Analysis and Finally Best Efforts.
Remember Your Excuses, Your Resistance and Your Comfort Zone in Ignorance, will give you nothing but self denial , self blame and self doubting behaviour.
The "Trio of Preparation with Awareness":
1. Syllabus
2. PYQ
3. Self-Analysis
As a catalyst in the process, Mentor may be useful to the extent you are ready to accept and utilise mentor.
All the best 🌿

⚡️⚡️
UPSC CSE EXAM is hard to achieve, not because of its nature, but because of an aspirant's ignorance of himself/herself, ignorance about UPSC CSE EXAM (SYLLABUS & PYQ) and heavy& blind investment in market lies.⚡️⚡️
Ask Yourself to know, why it is hard to achieve, you may get an answer depending upon how much awake you are or how much you still reluctant to awake.... That answer decides where you are in this journey at this moment....
If at all you are still reluctant to come out of ignorance, then you may have to face the consequences of such ignorance, the consequences are nothing but a continuous loop of failures.
On the other hand if you can Awake and Aware in this Preparation, at least some result may come which your efforts may deserve.
Prepare Well with Awareness 🔥

Attributes expected from a Mentee for the maximum realisation of the Mentorship Programme Objectives: The 3 A's
Accountability: Accountability to their own goal and accountability to Mentor
Acceptance: Ability to Accept their mistakes without EGO's argument/resistance ( logical reasoning and analysis of Mentor's critical remarks is appreciated, but not egoistic arguments)
Amenability: Readiness to act upon Mentor's suggestions by doing necessary amendments in one's approach and mindset
Without any one of them, if an aspirant joins any mentorship or go to mentor, it's just waste of time and money.
The word Mentorship became a common word now a days, and also good number of aspirants are joining it without knowing what actually a Mentor is and how to utilise Mentor. Rather they are expecting from Mentor approval for their sluggish and ignorant way of preparation ( just mentor should listen to their ego voice and say that " yeah everything is going well", "you are improving" , such kind of pleasing statements) and so called ready-made 'time tables' ( people are rushing to meet schedules, but not emphasizing on whether they really understanding the concepts or not)
Mentor is not there to say pleasing statements or just to keep you in the loop with false belief that everything is good.
Mentor duty is to do critical diagnosis of an aspirant's preparation, being equally critical in explaining the same and compassionately guiding them to do preparation with awareness by helping in rectifying the mistakes.
From the past five years, seen a variety of expectations with which aspirants are joining mentorship without having any of the above mentioned attributes. Only very rare are real aspirants who are qualified to be mentee.
Mentorship became a panacea in the market to clear UPSC, there most of the aspirants are blindly falling for that buzz word without knowing what is their need and what they have to get from mentor.
Without Self-Analysis and Awareness, everything may end up adding another layer of ignorance to one's preparation, wasting lot of money and also productive time and efforts.
Before looking for any mentorship program or personal mentor, ask yourself why you need it, are you ready to be a mentee ( having required attributes or not) and how to utilise Mentor's assistance?
Prepare well with Awareness, also spend your productive time, efforts and money with Awareness (without falling in the alluring traps of market)
All the best🌿
