#BeOpenART #BeOpenNEWS We are happy to announce the winners of the BE OPEN Regional Art competition, held from July to September and featuring young artists from across South America — including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and French Guiana. The €500 prize was awarded to Andrea Terceros from Bolivia, the winner for July. Honorary mentions were given to Elenise Xisto from Brazil (August winner) and María Camila Cepeda from Colombia (September winner), in recognition of their outstanding submissions. In addition, a special €300 Founder’s Choice Award, selected by BE OPEN founder Elena Baturina, was presented to Nadir Alzamora (Ridan) from Peru. We extend our thanks to all participants for sharing their work and creativity.

A queer and disabled multidisciplinary artist, Ash creates bold, expressive paintings that celebrate queer joy and challenge societal norms. Their work centers on identity, self-acceptance, and the beauty of marginalized experiences. ART LIMITLESS is a special initiative within the BE OPEN Art platform, highlighting artists whose work promotes inclusion, accessibility, and sustainability in the creative industries. As the monthly winner, Ash is now in the running for the €1,000 grand prize.

#BeOpenARCH Rojkind Arquitectos and AMASA Estudio have designed Vinícola Pictograma, a circular, earth-toned winery in Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe that blends contemporary design with the rugged landscape. The building features radiating brick vaults around a central courtyard, housing production and hospitality areas. Submerged into the terrain for minimal impact, it uses local materials and passive cooling to promote sustainability. Described as an “immersive architectural experience,” the design prioritizes efficiency, natural ventilation, and a deep connection to place and community.

#BeOpenDESIGN Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Morphing Matter Lab have developed a technique called Thermorph, which uses standard FDM 3D printing to create flat plastic objects that fold themselves into specific shapes when heated. By manipulating print speeds and combining materials with different contraction properties, the team turned typically undesirable warping into a controlled design feature. These self-folding items, like a rose, boat, and bunny, transform when placed in hot water, thanks to custom software based on curve-folding theory. The researchers envision scaling this technology to produce flat-pack items like furniture or emergency shelters that can self-assemble using just heat, making manufacturing and shipping more efficient and accessible.

#BeOpenART #BeOpenNEWS BE OPEN Art has named María Camila Cepeda as the Regional Artist of the Month for September 2025, concluding the South America stage of its global art competition. Running from July through September, the program showcases emerging talent from across South America, including countries such as Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and more. María Camila, a Colombian artist now based in the UK, explores the intersection of fiction and culture in her work, recently focusing on animals and bestiaries as mirrors of human identity and storytelling. María Camila now joins July winner Andrea Terceros (Bolivia) and August winner Elenise Xisto (Brazil) in the final round of the competition. Together, they will compete for the regional title and a €500 cash prize, along with expanded international exposure through the BE OPEN Art platform.

#BeOpenNEWS #BeOpenART BE OPEN Art, the online gallery by Elena Baturina’s humanitarian think-tank BE OPEN, has launched the next stage of its 2025 Regional Art competition, now turning its focus to Western Africa. Running from October through December, this phase will spotlight emerging artists from countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, as well as Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The initiative celebrates creative expressions that reflect local cultural identities. Each month, 20 selected artists will be featured in the BE OPEN Art online gallery, where public voting will determine the Regional Artist of the Month. At the end of the stage, one of the monthly winners will be named Artist of the Region and awarded €500.

#BeOpenDESIGN As the volume of short-lived, hard-to-recycle consumer footwear continues to grow, UK footwear brand Vivobarefoot has prototyped a compostable version of its VivoBiome sneaker, developed using a biodegradable thermoplastic material created by Balena. The project, described as “Scan-to-print-to-soil,” explores a production model in which shoes are 3D printed on demand following a foot scan, used, and eventually returned to the earth.

The competition is open to students, graduates and young professionals. The competition aims to encourage creation of innovative solutions by younger creatives, for a more prosperous and sustainable future, and the focus of the competition is the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Programme.
