#BeOpenDESIGN Italian designer Mara Bragagnolo’s Nook Collection is a thoughtfully designed series of flat-pack plywood furniture created to support the diverse needs of children on the autism spectrum. Inspired by children's toys and built with puzzle-like construction, the pieces are modular, adaptable, and accessible—both in price and purpose. From the sensory-friendly Hug Sofa to the multifunctional Everyone Desk and privacy-enhancing Light Screen, each design empowers users to shape their own environments rather than conforming to them. Drawing on her own experience with autism and developed through community collaboration, Bragagnolo’s collection is a powerful example of inclusive design with emotional intelligence and real-world impact. #BeOpenARCH Rojkind Arquitectos and AMASA Estudio have designed Vinícola Pictograma, a circular, earth-toned winery in Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe that blends contemporary design with the rugged landscape. The building features radiating brick vaults around a central courtyard, housing production and hospitality areas. Submerged into the terrain for minimal impact, it uses local materials and passive cooling to promote sustainability. Described as an “immersive architectural experience,” the design prioritizes efficiency, natural ventilation, and a deep connection to place and community.

#BeOpenDESIGN Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Morphing Matter Lab have developed a technique called Thermorph, which uses standard FDM 3D printing to create flat plastic objects that fold themselves into specific shapes when heated. By manipulating print speeds and combining materials with different contraction properties, the team turned typically undesirable warping into a controlled design feature. These self-folding items, like a rose, boat, and bunny, transform when placed in hot water, thanks to custom software based on curve-folding theory. The researchers envision scaling this technology to produce flat-pack items like furniture or emergency shelters that can self-assemble using just heat, making manufacturing and shipping more efficient and accessible.

#BeOpenDESIGN Swapz is a modular slipper concept by industrial designer Ellie Kim that addresses footwear waste through a clever, customizable design. Built around a simple rail-and-groove system, Swapz allows users to easily slide and lock interchangeable straps onto a reusable slipper sole—no tools, glue, or fasteners required. Inspired by the unnecessary disposal of slippers with broken uppers but intact soles, the design encourages longevity and personalization without compromising ease of use. With potential for a wide range of materials and patterns, Swapz blends sustainability with self-expression, reimagining everyday footwear as both adaptable and enduring. #BeOpenDESIGN French artist Christophe Guinet, known as Monsieur Plant, has reimagined the iconic Batman suit using tree bark, moss, lichen, and fungi in a striking fusion of pop culture and ecological art. Created in collaboration with Warner Bros. France and Splendens Factory, the sculptural piece transforms the superhero’s high-tech armor into an organic, living exoskeleton—one that reflects nature’s own protective systems. Wrapped over a foam mold, the bark forms Batman’s signature silhouette, turning the Dark Knight into a symbol of natural resilience and inviting a deeper reflection on the balance between human invention and the environment. #BeOpenDESIGN What Goes Around Comes Around by Sophie Stanitzek, a student at the Berlin University of the Arts, is a speculative design project imagining life under extreme climate conditions in a world with two suns. Through absurd, low-tech objects like parabolic tanning devices, the project critiques techno-solutionism and highlights the growing inequality of comfort and resilience in the face of environmental collapse. Rather than offering solutions, Stanitzek amplifies existing symptoms to prompt deeper reflection on our relationship with natural forces and shared resources in a destabilized world.

#BeOpenDESIGN Circular Superstructures by Žofia Horová is an experimental design project exploring sustainable seating through additive manufacturing. Focusing on mono-material construction, Horová investigates how 3D-printed chain structures can mimic textile properties while remaining fully recyclable—eliminating the need for adhesives or mixed materials that hinder end-of-life processing. Her work addresses environmental challenges tied to product disposal and calls for a shift in material and production logic within interior design. The result is a modular, comfortable seating concept that embodies circularity, flexibility, and innovation in sustainable furniture design.

#BeOpenDESIGN Kirin Holdings’ Taste-Adjusting Chopsticks offer a groundbreaking and delightfully unexpected fusion of food science and wearable technology. Developed in collaboration with Meiji University, the device uses a wrist-worn mini-computer to send a mild electric current through specially designed chopsticks, amplifying the perception of saltiness in low-sodium foods. By activating sodium ion receptors on the tongue, the system tricks the brain into tasting more salt without adding any, enhancing flavor while supporting healthier diets.
