#BeOpenDESIGN Humanization of Pediatric Care is a master’s thesis by Oliwia Olbinska, completed at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw. The project addresses the psychological stress and potential trauma experienced by children during hospitalization, with a focus on radiological procedures. Market analysis revealed a lack of appropriate tools for positioning and immobilizing young patients during X-ray imaging. In response, Olbinska developed a comprehensive set of pediatric positioning aids, including upper and lower limb supports, universal modular elements, ergonomic foam blocks, and a therapeutic toy available in two variants featuring analog animation and fluid motion to distract and calm the child during procedures. All materials used are highly radiolucent to ensure optimal image quality.

#BeOpenDESIGN Hou de Sousa’s Creativity Blooms transforms Adobe’s San Jose headquarters into a vibrant, sculptural experience, with a grove of latticed metal trees that shimmer with color by day and glow like lanterns by night. Installed on a pedestrian bridge connecting Adobe’s newly added Founder’s Tower with the existing campus, the installation draws inspiration from San Jose’s agricultural roots, Adobe’s colorful identity, and the creative potential of its tools. Each aluminum tree features a unique form and color spectrum, encouraging exploration and reflection. Thoughtfully engineered to integrate with the bridge structure, the trees are joined by organically shaped benches that invite rest and interaction, unifying the campus through light, form, and public engagement.

#BeOpenDESIGN Berlin-based jewellery brand Studio GOGO has created a line of customisable rings made from recycled silver, featuring a central plate shaped like a Lego tile—allowing wearers to stack and swap real Lego bricks to suit their mood or style. Initially inspired by a school project by founder Thanh-Truc Nguyen, the brand uses digital modelling and the lost-wax casting technique to handcraft each piece. The collection, which began with classic two-by-two tiles, has since expanded to include a variety of shapes and will soon grow to feature Lego-compatible bracelets and necklaces.

#BeOpenDESIGN Scape for Every Moment by icai architects is a poetic intervention in Yokohama’s high-rise landscape that reimagines street furniture as a soft, sensory experience. Installed in a small urban park, the project features overlapping circular platforms at varying heights, surrounded by delicate organdie curtains that shift with the wind and light. Visitors are invited to sit, recline, or simply pause within this ephemeral space, where shadows, reflections, and breezes continually transform the atmosphere. Blurring the line between structure and environment, the installation creates a gentle separation between people without isolating them—offering a new kind of public intimacy in the heart of the city. #BeOpenDESIGN The Maillet nutcracker by Éloi Goulhot is a beautifully minimalist take on a traditional French method of cracking nuts with a mallet. Crafted from durable beech wood with a rubber-capped striking end, it blends heritage with modern design sensibility. Instead of gears or levers, Maillet relies on a simple yet satisfying action: place the nut in its chamber and gently strike it. The rubber cap absorbs shock and reduces noise, while the natural wood gives it a warm, sculptural presence making it as much a conversation piece as a functional kitchen tool. Tiny Farm Fort, designed by Tiny Farm Lab in Rishikesh, India, is a hand-built cob house that exemplifies sustainable, bioregional architecture through the revival of traditional building methods. Constructed by over 90 volunteers from 18 countries using local materials like clay, straw, lime, stone, and reclaimed wood, the structure embraces a circular, low-carbon design ethos. With thick cob walls for thermal regulation, a living roof made of eucalyptus beams, and interiors finished with natural plasters and salvaged objects, the house reflects deep ecological sensitivity and social inclusiveness. The project not only offers a climate-resilient alternative to conventional construction but also empowers communities by preserving indigenous knowledge, promoting eco-conscious craftsmanship, and providing sustainable livelihoods. #BeOpenARCH

#BeOpenART #BeOpenNEWS We are proud to announce Myriam Maroto as the August winner of the ART LIMITLESS competition, hosted by BE OPEN Art. A self-taught graphic artist from Spain, Myriam has been painting for as long as she can remember. Living with autism, she turns to art as an outlet to manage daily stress, express emotions that are difficult to articulate in words, and find a deep sense of balance and freedom. Her work is distinguished by its unconventional, tactile materials, including ballpoint pen linework in oil-based ink, coffee art with warm, earthy tones, and soft pastel blending that evokes both sensitivity and vibrancy. Maroto’s recognition comes as part of ART LIMITLESS, a special section of the BE OPEN Art online gallery dedicated to inclusive arts and sustainability in the creative industries. As the August winner, Myriam now joins the running for the €1,000 grand prize, which will be awarded in September 2025. Congratulations to Myriam Maroto on this well-deserved achievement!

#BeOpenDESIGN Researchers at the University of Washington have developed the Thermal Earring, a lightweight, wireless wearable that clips onto the earlobe to monitor body temperature, stress, eating, exercise, and ovulation with greater accuracy than smartwatches. Designed with two sensors—one for skin and one for ambient temperature—the device operates efficiently with a 28-day battery life, using Bluetooth to transmit data before entering low-power sleep mode. Its compact form and earlobe placement allow for more precise readings, and future versions may include heart rate tracking and sustainable power sources like solar or kinetic energy.

#BeOpenARCH Michael Jantzen’s Folding Landscape Pavilion is an interactive architectural concept that seamlessly merges with its environment, using hinged photo-laminated panels to create an illusion of disappearing into the New Mexico landscape from which its images are sourced. It invites users to physically reshape it, transforming from minimalist cube to dynamic sculpture. As the real-world environment shifts around it, the static, high-resolution photos emphasize the contrast between the frozen and the living, turning the pavilion into a poetic exploration of place.

#BeOpenDESIGN RO is a wearable anxiety-relief vest designed by Janne Kreimer that uses soft robotic pods to gently inflate against the wearer’s body, applying pressure to personalized acupressure points identified through 3D body scanning. Crafted from TPU-coated nylon, the vest mimics the calming effects of deep-pressure therapy, helping activate the parasympathetic nervous system during moments of stress. By merging smart technology with somatic design, RO offers a tailored, touch-based approach to emotional regulation—like a high-tech hug for the nervous system. More anxiety reliefs on our blog.

#BeOpenDESIGN Re:shell is a biodegradable building material developed by a team at Seoul National University’s Living Design Lab, transforming discarded eggshells into modular, interlocking bricks that decompose naturally at the end of their lifecycle. Designed to address South Korea's mounting construction waste crisis, Re:shell merges traditional Korean design philosophies with material innovation, offering a scalable, zero-waste alternative for modern architecture. By repurposing calcium-rich eggshells collected from local food industries and blending them with natural additives like clay and straw, the team has created a sustainable composite that balances durability with ecological responsibility. More on how eggshells are redefining sustainable design in our blog.

#BeOpenDESIGN Researchers at UC Davis have developed Jelly Ice, a reusable, non-melting ice cube made from 90% water and 10% gelatin, with no synthetic polymers. Inspired by the limitations of frozen tofu and melting ice in seafood displays, the gelatin forms a network that traps water, allowing the cubes to stay solid at low temperatures and flexible at room temperature. Jelly Ice absorbs up to 80% of the heat that regular ice does, without releasing meltwater, making it ideal for cooling food and drinks safely. It can be washed and reused through multiple freeze-thaw cycles, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional ice.
