John Steinbeck’s Top 6 Writing Tips (Part-1)
1) You will never finish … until you do
‘Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish. Lose track of the 400 pages and write just one page for each day, it helps. Then when it gets finished, you are always surprised.’
I love this one. Not only is it true that ‘all’ writing adds up, it is particularly useful to writers with day jobs, family commitments and other time constraints. Lots of writers stress about getting their writing done, but whether you have five hours or five minutes, ultimately it’s about self-belief and perseverance, as Steinbeck says.
TAKEAWAY: Write whatever you can, when you can.
2) Just get it written!
‘Write freely and as rapidly as possible and throw the whole thing on paper. Never correct or rewrite until the whole thing is down. Rewrite in process is usually found to be an excuse for not going on. It also interferes with flow and rhythm which can only come from a kind of unconscious association with the material.’
Writers often confess to me they are perfectionists. NoNoNoNoNoNO! Perfectionism is the enemy of creatives. We can’t write a ‘perfect’ first draft, no matter how much we edit as we go along. There will always be opportunities missed and things that go wrong. So don’t sweat it … just get it written.
TAKEAWAY: Ignore the desire to write a perfect first draft. It won’t happen.
3) Keep one special audience member in mind
‘Forget your generalised audience. In the first place, the nameless, faceless audience will scare you to death and in the second place, unlike the theatre, it doesn’t exist. In writing, your audience is one single reader. I have found that sometimes it helps to pick out one person —a real person you know, or an imagined person and write to that one.’
Steinbeck had a certain amount of leeway as a literary author in days gone by. In contrast, target audience is super-important in 2019 when audiences are increasingly media literate.
That said, Steinbeck’s idea of the ‘special audience member’ still holds water. Knowing WHO your story is for (rather than ‘just’ yourself) is a great start and will always help you focus.
TAKEAWAY: Know WHO your story is for.

me and abdurashid had a lovely conversation over a dinner
we talked about uyghur instability, the travels that profs had in china, india, kurgizstan, etc
above is prof durlauf
under him is prof felix
what i found most interesting is how resourceful they are. having studied people and literature for decades with unmatched rigor and interest, they have become so insightful and articulate.
to distinguish abdurashid and i, prof felix called us "a subset of you" - поднмножество
all opinions they express are very structured - clear thesis, body 1, trustworthy support from a reputable source, body 2, and memorable conclusions.
their speeches, while structured, avoid the formulaic feel common in many Uzbek speeches. instead, it delivers its message with great precision and clarity

Liberal Arts as IVIES?
I was really bored one day, so I started thinking, what if liberal arts colleges were Ivies? Here is what I came up with:
Harvard = Williams
The original
Has the most prestige of any school in its category
Princeton = Amherst
Superbly strong economics department
Has the most preppy students of the schools in its category
Located in vibrant college town
Yale = Oberlin
Really social justice-y
Excels in the fine arts
Columbia = Barnard
Main appeal is its location (“It’s in NEW YORK!”)
These two colleges are actually affiliated.
University of Pennsylvania = Claremont McKenna
Many students focus on finance.
Has strong graduate program in finance (sorry guys had a hard time finding a fit for UPenn).
Dartmouth = Bowdoin
Student body is very outdoorsy.
Many students live in houses rather than dorms.
Brown = Swarthmore
Very liberal and quirky student body.
Cornell = Harvey Mudd
Very different from the others in its category.
Best engineering program in its category.
Also, other elite universities and their liberal arts college counterparts:
UChicago = Reed
Very tough grading
Huge proponent of free speech
Stanford = NYUAD
Near the beach in California
Incredibly Diverse.
Big concentration of wealthy kids.
Located in world-leading hubs for innovation.
From Reddit.

it turns out, income alone cannot be a reason for migration
idiosyncratic preferences like wanting to live in a sea view, amenities, and migration costs are also big factors in measuring migration
