🇬🇧 The Chappe Optical Telegraph Claude Chappe devised an ingenious aerial telegraph communication system during the French Revolution. It consisted of a network of towers with mobile semaphores that transmitted coded messages over distances of approximately 25 km between towers, which were topped by a mobile mast visible with binoculars from the next tower. The first operational line, Paris-Lille (1794), allowed messages to be transmitted in just six hours. By 1844, 534 towers covered the French territory, linking the most important urban areas across more than 5,000 km. In 1845, the first electric telegraph line in France was installed between Paris and Rouen, marking the end of the Chappe towers.
