🇬🇧 Truso — a Prussian Emporium and an Important Center of the Amber Road Truso (Truso, from Prussian Drusin, lit. drūsas – strong), an early medieval trade and craft settlement in the lower reaches of the Vistula River. Mentioned by the Anglo-Saxon traveler of the late 9th century, Wulfstan. Identified with a settlement of the 8th-12th centuries near the modern village of Janów (Janów Pomorski) on the shore of Lake Druszno (formerly with access to the Baltic Sea), 7 km from the city of Elbląg (Poland). Excavations by Marek Jagodziński in 1983-2010 Area 600×500 m, bounded on the landward side by a semicircular rampart. Pole and log buildings, traces of amber processing and bone carving crafts, iron plates (raw material), fishing weights, West Slavic and Prussian ceramics, more than 500 dirhams (including a hoard), beads and ancient Scandinavian, Byzantine and Old Russian artifacts. Traces of a fire in the second half of the 9th century Apparently, the defense of Truso is associated with the remains of at least 5 unloaded ships, burned and sunk at the mouth of a stream that flowed through Truso. In Elbląg, rich burials of the 7th-9th centuries were studied: male burials characteristic of the Prussians; female burials with jewelry from the island of Gotland.
