Die Forscher kritisieren, dass viele Klimabilanzen lediglich die Methanemissionen der Rinder berücksichtigen, nicht aber die CO₂-Bindung von Grasland. Ihre Ergebnisse zeigen: Gut bewirtschaftete Weiden können – begünstigt durch Beweidung und Rinderdung – mehr Kohlenstoff im Boden und in den Pflanzen speichern, als durch die Rinder an CO₂ und sogar Methan entsteht.
Die Wissenschaftler hoffen, dass ihre Forschung bisherige Annahmen über die Rolle der Landwirtschaft im Klimawandel korrigiert – und die Klimabilanz von Rindern künftig vollständiger bewertet wird.
