Seeking Knowledge Refines Character
Acquiring sacred knowledge shapes one's behaviour and temperament. It strengthens self-control in the face of provocations. That's the point.
A man insulted Imām Waki' ibn al-Jarrah, and he did not respond. It was said to him: 'Why don't you counter him?' He said: 'Then why did we learn knowledge?'"

Kitāb Al-'Azīz 📖
"We have found through experience, and some have found through academic study, that nothing brings more people into the Deen of Allāh than their reading of a translation of (the meanings of) this precious Book."

When the heart discovers something greater than the world, the world loses its power to impress or distress it. Al-Hasan al-Basrī (d.110H) said:
والله لقد أدركت أقواما كانت الدنيا أهون عليهم من التراب الذي تمشون عليه، ما يبالون، أشرقت الدنيا أم غربت، ذهبت إلى ذا؟ أو ذهبت إلى ذا
"By Allāh, I encountered people for whom this world was more insignificant than the dust you tread beneath your feet. They cared not whether the world dawned bright or set into darkness, whether it turned this way or that."

As part of a lengthier Hadīth, the Prophet ﷺ said:
أَلَا إِنِّي أُوتِيتُ الْكِتَابَ وَمِثْلَهُ مَعَهُ
"I have indeed been given the Book, and something like it along with it."
[Abī Dāwūd (4604); Al-Tirmidhī (2664) and Ahmad (17174)]
The phrase "and something like it along with it" (wa-mithlahu maʿahu) is profoundly important. It means that the Prophet ﷺ wasn't given the Qur'ān and then left the Ummah to interpret and implement it without Prophetic guidance. The Sunnah is indispensable to understanding the Qur'ān.
This also places our relationship with the Prophet ﷺ at the pinnacle of all mankind.* We don't only ask: "What does the Qur'ān say?" We ask: "How did the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ understand, explain and live it?"
Allāh gave us the Book; and He gave us the Messenger ﷺ to teach us how to put the Book into daily practice.
* Sahīh al-Bukhārī (15) and Muslim (44)

• Don't approach nafl worship as something dispensable; cultivate such consistency in it that it becomes part of your daily discipline.
• Hold such intense fear of sin that you flee from it as you would from the gravest thing that would lead to your ruin.
• Never trust every impulse of the nafs. What is pleasurable may still corrupt the heart, so indulge desire with the caution.
• Excessive socialising can consume time, weaken resolve, expose one to heedlessness and entangle the heart. Approach it with vigilance.
• Eat for nourishment and strength; avoid unhealthy food and take what benefits the body. Stop before appetite becomes excess.

Avoiding sins and leaving what does not concern you illuminates the heart, for the heart is affected by what a person repeatedly does and focuses on. A beautiful reminder that it isn't just about "doing good", but equally about removing what is unnecessarily occupying your heart.

"Fear of nifāq protects you against nifāq" expresses a profound principle found in the attitude of the early Muslims.
A believer who fears hypocrisy is more likely to examine himself, correct his intentions, and flee from the very qualities that constitute hypocrisy. It keeps the heart under inspection before hypocrisy can ever make itself at home.
