Although it is usually not a good idea to compare the gravity of one sin to another, it is fairly clear in the context provided that the gravity of forgery against the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم far exceeds that of free mixing in the manner described. Forgery in this instance has a number of aggravating factors: - It is being perpetrated in the mosque, the House of Allah. - It is done so religiously, thus also rendering it into a form of bid'ah. - The hadith warning against forgery is arguably the only hadith that is a candidate of being described as mutawatir. Its prominence in the Sunnah is beyond question. Conversely, free mixing in this instance has numerous mitigating factors: - It is done with the acknowledgement of it being a sin - or at least it is done culturally and not religiously. - Though problematic in the manner described, free mixing is context dependent and subjective, with some cases being far less severe than others. It is not a universal and uniform, like travel on a plane, Tawaf, attending the bazaar, being in the same hall for Salah, etc. - none of which can be described as the same in terms of depravity as needless free mixing. - It is not as prominent in terms of it being condemned as forgery against the Prophet. (If it was outright zina, then maybe that can be described as the same class of forgery vis-a-vis prominence.) It is therefore good to see that over 80% of respondents understood the prominence and the aggravated element of forgery. The poll put forth is not in a vacuum. With the wedding season coming up and many mosques issuing warnings from the pulpits against free mixing, it is a miscalculation on the part of those Imams and mosques who have fabricated narrations like the 80 Salawat on Friday plastered up in their mosque 24/7. All what that proves is that it is fashionable and socially acceptable in those mosques (many of which don't even accommodate sisters, but that's another story) to rally around free mixing in wedding settings, but can't even say a word to remove those fabricated hadiths that are hung up on their mosque walls.
