Let’s just be honest here, the third season of "One-Punch Man" is not an anime. It is a PowerPoint presentation that someone accidentally uploaded to a streaming service. To call what they did "animation" would be an insult to every flipbook ever drawn in a school notebook. I have seen more movement in a photograph.
From the very first episode, it is painfully clear that the production committee decided to just give up. The legendary Saitama, the hero who can end any fight with a single punch, has been reduced to a collection of three recycled expressions and a stiff, looping run cycle. But he looks like a master of motion compared to the treatment of Garou.
What did they do to Garou? The character who is supposed to be this fluid, monstrously powerful martial artist, a terrifying force of nature? In this season, he doesn't fight; he slides. He just... slides across the screen. It's like the animators found a single PNG image of him looking vaguely intense, and they just decided to drag it back and forth over a background of what looks like clipart grass. When he is supposed to be moving at superhuman speeds, the brilliant solution is to make the background blurry while his static PNG model glides over it. It is laughable. It is pathetic. It is an absolute betrayal of the source material and the character's entire concept.
There is no sakuga here. There are no dynamic fight scenes that made the first season a global phenomenon. Instead, we get still frames. So many still frames. A character will swing a weapon, and instead of seeing the motion, we get a "whoosh" sound effect and a speed line. Then we cut to the aftermath. It is the cinematic equivalent of a chef describing a meal instead of cooking it. The over-reliance on panning shots over static illustrations, or worse, those hideous CGI crowds that look like they were imported from a 2005 mobile game, is just embarrassing.
And don't even get me started on the sound design, which is trying its absolute hardest to convince you that something exciting is happening when your eyes are telling you that you are watching a slideshow. The constant, overly-dramatic clanging of metal and generic rock music feels like a desperate attempt to distract from the visual void on screen.
This isn't a season of an anime; it's a storyboard. It's a collection of key frames with the in-between animation completely missing. They had years for this. Years! And this is the result? A slideshow of PNGs and a protagonist who fights with the fluidity of a rusty door hinge? It feels like a cheap, rushed product that was pushed out the door with zero respect for the audience or the incredible story Yusuke Murata laid out in the manga.
Watching this feels like a punishment. You keep waiting for it to get better, for the "real" animation to kick in, but it never does. It's just 12 episodes of Garou sliding around like a misplaced sticker and Saitama standing there with a blank look, which, to be fair, is probably an accurate representation of the viewers face by the end of this travesty. Save your time. Read the manga. Watch the first season again. Do anything but subject yourself to this insulting, lazy, and utterly disappointing spectacle. A complete and total failure.
