After the Massacre of Glencoe Scottish artist: Peter Graham (1836–1921) Oil on canvas; 123.2×175.8 cm National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia This painting depicts the infamous massacre of the MacDonald clan in Glen Coe on February 13, 1692. Royal troops serving under William III had been quartered in local homes under the pretext of tax collection. In the early morning hours, they turned on their hosts—the MacDonalds—and launched a brutal attack. By order, they were to "kill all who were younger than seventy years." The villages of Glen Coe were then burned to the ground. Aesthorizon
