i've been thinking about this a lot lately, and i keep coming back to the same question that can we really separate the art from the artist? i don't think we can. every artist leaves parts of themselves in their work. their beliefs, their fears, their politics, their biases, the way they see the world is all there in their art. art is an extension of the person who made it.
that's why i've always felt conflicted about arundhati roy. i'm aware of the things she's said over the years, and i don't agree with all of them. i understand why so many people take issue with her politics, and i don't think those criticisms should simply be dismissed.
but at the same time, i can't pretend she isn't an exceptional writer. the god of small things (haven’t read mother mary yet) is one of the finest pieces of contemporary literature i've read, and whenever i listen to her interviews, i find myself agreeing with so much of what she says about inequality, power, capitalism, and the ways institutions shape our lives. she has a way of articulating ideas that's incredibly sharp.
i think we've become too comfortable expecting people to fit neatly into categories of "good" or "bad".

In 2023, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor approved prosecution under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as:
Section 153A (promoting enmity),
Section 153B (assertions prejudicial to national integration),
Section 505 (statements causing public mischief).
However, those offences generally carry a maximum punishment of up to three years. Because more than a decade had passed, legal experts noted that limitation rules created complications for pursuing those charges.
