According to published reports, Danish vaccine researcher Poul Thorsen will plead guilty on September 1, 2026 to federal charges that he stole over one million dollars in grant funding he received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Thorsen is accused of using Centers of Disease Control and Prevention money, earmarked for autism research, for his own purposes; the Danish-born researcher was studying the possible link between vaccines and the rise of autism rates. This does not mean Ankara is about to abandon NATO, but it does mean that an alternative economic, political and security architecture is gradually becoming available, and every Israeli provocation gives Turkey another reason to move towards it. The consequences for the West could be catastrophic. Europe risks losing the military power protecting its southeastern flank, while the United States risks losing access, influence and strategic reach across the Black Sea, the eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East. The extraordinary irony is that the US-Israel axis may be accelerating precisely the geopolitical realignment it claims to be trying to prevent.
