| 13 | I started learning Android a few months ago, and instead of jumping straight into Android Studio, I decided to figure out what actually happens under the hood.
I started by building an Android app manually from the command line using basic Android tools like "javac", "aapt2", "d8", and the Android SDK.
Then I moved on to Gradle and wrote my own tasks to automate the whole process.
Finally, I introduced AGP and replaced my custom tasks with it. Doing things manually first made it much easier to understand what AGP is actually doing behind the scenes.
I wrote everything down in a small 3-chapter series. I originally planned a fourth chapter about Android Studio, but I got busy and never finished it. I might actually go back and write it though.
I shared the journey on r/androiddev and it got 130k+ views, while the repo got 50+ GitHub stars, which honestly surprised me.
If you're learning Android and want to understand what happens between your source code and an APK, you might enjoy it.
