Brief explanation
• ZEC / Zcash: A privacy coin in the style of “base money.” It focuses on anonymous transactions (shielded txs using zk-SNARKs), has a fixed supply of ~21 million, uses PoW, and its main goal is private value transfer. Similar to Bitcoin: simple, centered on store-of-value / private cash, with limited (or not yet strong) complex smart contract capabilities.
• Zama: Not a privacy coin or a separate L1/L2. It is a confidentiality layer (FHE) that runs on existing chains (Ethereum, soon Solana…). It enables smart contracts to compute directly on end-to-end encrypted data, maintains composability with public DeFi, supports programmable privacy (who can decrypt what), and remains publicly verifiable. The goal is confidential DeFi, stablecoins with hidden balances/amounts, RFQ swaps that avoid MEV, RWAs, payroll, vaults… directly on Ethereum itself.
Zama explicitly states: “Zama is not trying to be Zcash.” They are building infrastructure for institutions, not competing directly with cypherpunk-style privacy coins.
Quick comparison with other privacy projects
• Aztec: Closer as a “privacy L2 on Ethereum” (ZK-rollup + private state). However, Aztec is still a separate chain/rollup, while Zama is a chain-agnostic FHE layer with stronger composability with the existing ecosystem.
• Secret Network / Oasis: Privacy smart contracts using TEE (hardware enclaves) — easier to use but with a different trust model (not pure cryptography like FHE).
• Aleo / Penumbra: Deep private execution, but usually within their own ecosystems.
Zama stands out because: FHE allows computation on encrypted data (not just proving like ZK), is post-quantum, and preserves the liquidity + composability of Ethereum/Solana.
In summary:
ZEC = Bitcoin of privacy (private money).
Zama = Ethereum of privacy (confidential programmable finance on public chains).
If viewed as an “infrastructure layer,” Zama is also similar to Chainlink (oracles) or HTTPS — a foundational layer that the entire public-chain ecosystem will use when institutions and large-scale DeFi need privacy + compliance.
