| 17 | Bukit China, Melaka — A Hill That Holds 500 Years of Memories
Hidden behind the bustling streets of Melaka lies Bukit China, one of the most important Chinese heritage sites in Southeast Asia. For over 500 years, this hill has been the final resting place of generations of Chinese merchants, pioneers, and settlers who crossed the seas to make Nanyang their home.
At the foot of the hill stands Poh San Teng Temple (宝山亭), built in 1795 during the Dutch colonial era by Kapitan Chua Su Cheong (蔡士章), the leader of Melaka’s Chinese community. Dedicated to Tua Pek Kong (福德正神), the temple has quietly watched over the ancestors buried on this sacred hill.
Within the temple grounds sits the legendary Hang Li Po Well, once an important source of fresh water for the local community.
