Idowu, who registered at the JAMB Professional Test Center in Ibadan, Oyo State, expressed his excitement about the smooth registration process. The 2025 UTME registration started on January 31. Last week, JAMB revealed that over 700,000 candidates have registered, including 11,000 underage applicants. Idowu shared that his initial fears about pursuing higher education at his age were dispelled after his seamless registration experience. He commended the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for the efficient use of technology, such as integrating his National Identity Number (NIN), which simplified data collection and ensured a user-friendly process. His story was featured in the latest bulletin of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. “I can now attain my dream at an advanced age. “The registration staff gave me a sense of belonging through the warm reception at the registration venue” he noted. He also advised other candidates to embrace professionalism and contentment in their academic journey. The nonagenarian encouraged the Board to maintain this positive trajectory to continue ensuring access to education for all, particularly the elderly, the underprivileged, and those with disabilities.

*JAMB has announced that 90% of available slots for the optional mock exam have been filled, with only a few states still having space.* The board clarified that it does not assign exam towns to candidates, urging them to choose locations carefully to avoid unnecessary travel stress. Some applicants intentionally select distant towns to secure a mock exam slot, only to later complain. JAMB emphasized that once a town's capacity is full, it can no longer be selected. Candidates should consider travel logistics before making a choice, as the board will not be responsible for any inconvenience. Meanwhile, UTME registration costs N8,700 for candidates opting for the mock exam and N7,200 for those skipping it. A new mock trial option costs N5,000, while Direct Entry (DE) applicants will pay N6,700. Candidates must also provide their NIN and use a retrievable phone number for registration.

*NECO releases 2024 SSCE external results* The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External results, with 57,114 candidates obtaining five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics. The Registrar of NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, who disclosed this while announcing the release of the results in Minna on Friday, said there was a pass rate of 67.35 per cent. Wushishi, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of NECO, said the examination was conducted from Nov. 14 to Dec. 14, 2024, with 86,067 candidates registering. He noted that the release of the results was the culmination of the processes involved in the conduct of a successful examination, consisting of pre-examination, examination, and post-examination stages. Wushishi said a total of 29 subjects were examined, with 83,220 candidates sitting for English Language and 83,024 candidates sitting for Mathematics. He said the results showed that 62,929 candidates, representing 75.62 per cent, obtained credit and above in English Language, while 77,988 candidates, representing 93.93 per cent, obtained credit and above in Mathematics. The registrar said a total of 70,711 candidates, representing 83.39 per cent, obtained five credits and above, irrespective of English language and mathematics. Wushishi said that 6,160 candidates were, however, booked for various forms of malpractice, a reduction of 27.7 per cent compared to 2023. According to him, seven supervisors-two each in Oyo and Ogun and one each in Lagos, Cross River and Ebony-were recommended for blacklisting for poor supervision, lateness as well as aiding and abetting during the examination. He said that 14 centres—10 in Ogun and four in Oyo—were blacklisted for their involvement in whole centre malpractice in nine subjects. The registrar also said that candidates could access their results on the NECO official website, www.neco.gov.ng, using their examination registration number. Wushishi commended the federal government, the minister of education, and other stakeholders for their support and guidance. He also announced the release of the 2025 Digitalised Staff Annual Posting Calendar, which could be accessed by members of staff through apcic.neco.gov.ng/myapc. 🛑 🛑 🛑 *The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board says candidates under the age of 16 can be considered for admission into tertiary institutions if they demonstrate that they are academically exceptional by scoring 80 per cent and above in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.* *Given that the total score in the UTME is 400 marks, 80 represents a minimum score of 320.* *This development follows the recent reversal of the mandatory 18-year admission age benchmark introduced by the former Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman.* *The current education minister, Olatunji Alausa, reinstated the previous benchmark of 16 years, a move widely supported by stakeholders in the education sector.* *Speaking during a recent meeting with key stakeholders—including Chief External Examiners, Chief Technical Advisors, and members of the Equal Opportunity Group—JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, stated that while the 16-year age requirement remains the standard, exceptional candidates under the age of 16 may be granted admission under strict conditions.* *A transcript of the meeting, published in JAMB’s bulletin quoted quoted Oloyede as saying: “This is about complying with the law. Age plays a crucial role in maturity and academic development. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have age limits for leadership positions such as local government chairman. Biological age is linked to intellectual growth, and while rules exist, there must be room for exceptions.* *“The Minister of Education has clearly stated that the minimum age for admission remains 16. However, we acknowledge that some gifted children exist. These individuals should not be overlooked. We must identify them and allow them to sit for the exams.”* *Oloyede emphasised that exceptional students must demonstrate outstanding academic ability across multiple assessments, including the UTME, WASSCE, Post-UTME, and GCE O/Level.* *“If a candidate under 16 scores 200 out of 400 in the UTME, can they truly be considered exceptional? However, if they achieve 80% (320/400), that signals exceptional ability and warrants consideration,” he added.* *,He, however, expressed concerns over the role of private universities in admitting underage students, stating that many of these candidates struggle academically, with up to 80 per cenr eventually being transferred to other programmes due to poor performance.* *Oloyede also condemned the manipulation of birth records by parents seeking early admission for their wards, only to later attempt to alter their ages for eligibility in the National Youth Service Corps programme.* *Recently in Lagos, the JAMB Registrar disclosed that the exam body had introduced a mock UTME for underage candidates.* *Oloyede explained that the mock UTME is not for the purpose of tertiary institution admission but for underage seeking to test their ability.* *“We are starting the sale of forms on the 31st of January till 5th of March. There will be a mock exam on the 23rd of February and on the 8th of March there will be UTME,” the JAMB Registrar said.* 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
