“And I bring attention to a matter that some Muslims adopt the day of ‘Ashura as a day of Eid. And so they distribute sweets and make special desserts for that day. And they may even dress up their women with adornments and clothes that indicate joy on that day. And this matter isn’t allowed from two angles. As for the first angle: then is it’s in agreement (an imitation) of the Jews. For verily the Jews, with their fasting (on ‘Ashura) would take that day as a day of Eid and display joy and entertainment. And the would dress up their women [with the best dresses]. This shows the impermissibility (of this action). That is because imitating them on this (and any) religious matter(s) is prohibited with certainty. As for the second angle: the Prophet ‎ﷺ did not perform this action and neither did the companions. This shows the impermissibility of it and thus it is necessary to warn our families from making this day a day of Eid by making special foods, drinks, deserts and clothes. And on the contrary, the opposite of these people, whom Allah has misguided - make this day a day of mourning, beating and hurting themselves and other (actions) than that. As for the Ahlul Sunnah wal Jamma’ah, they do not make this day a day of mourning nor festival. Rather they observe fasting on it in the same way the Prophet ‎ﷺ observed fasting and encouraged to fast on it. And if it wasn’t that the Prophet ‎ﷺ fasted or that he ‎ﷺ encouraged to fast on this day then Ahlul Sunnah wal Jamma’ah would not observe fasting on it. And it is necessary to pay attention to this matter and warn people from it.” taken from recording

• The day of Ashura is the tenth of Muharram • The Prophet ﷺ fasted the day of Ashura in Makkah • The Prophet ﷺ fasted it when he made hijrah to Madinah, and he continued to fast it until his death • in the last Muharram of the Prophet ﷺ’s lifetime, he said, after having fasted the tenth only: “If I live until next year, I will certainly fast the ninth [day of Muharram]”. • The Prophet ﷺ used to seek fasting it, seeking its virtues • The Prophet ﷺ commanded [the muslims] to fast it [the day of Ashura] before the [obligation of] fasting Ramadan, and he commanded whoever awoke with a broken fast (not fasting) should fast for the rest of his day. • After the obligation of fasting Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ said that the day of Ashura is a day of the days of Allah, so whoever wishes to fast it [then he may fast it], and whoever wishes not to [then he may not]. • The Prophet ﷺ said that fasting the day of Ashura expiates the sins of a [whole] year

Regarding the fast after the day of Ashura (11th of al-Muharram) - the people of knowledge say there is no authentic Hadith regarding it. So fasting the 9th , 10th AND 11th has been criticised by the people of knowledge So the best level of fasting is to fast the 9th and 10th of al- Muharram. And if one falls short and fasts only on the 10th of al-Muharram, he will be rewarded for the sunnah. - Shaykh Aziz Farhan al Anzi حفظه الله https://youtu.be/-qr-dpHPEcA?si=v_0qe_qBIjHCQtgU Listen to this 2-3 min for more information in sha Allah

This day is fasted out of gratitude! The Prophet ‎ﷺ came to al Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura. He asked “What is this?” They responded, “This is a virtuous day, as this is the day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy. Thus, Musa fasted on this day.” He ‎ﷺ said, “We have more right to Musa than you.” (Or we are closer to Musa than you because Musa was a Muslim and we are Muslim). So he ‎ﷺ fasted this day and ordered the (people) to fast. Sahih al Bukhari 2004
