↟ This is Scandinavia ↟ The North, The land and the people beyond the Northern Wind, Thule, Hyperborea - Scandinavia has since ancient times been mythical and unexplored. ❄ Scandinavians was first mentioned by the greek historian Herodotos, who writes about Aristeas -a poet who lived 700BC. He told he had ventured the North which he called Hyperborea, and met the people who he called "Hyperboreans" or "The people North of the northern Wind". This people describes to be quite tall with light skin and often with blonde hair. They lived with harsh winters and decended from the northern wind itself, and are identified as today's native Scandinavians. ❄ Herodotos mention a snow nymph whom also decended from the northern wind -Skaði from Old Norse mythology. I made this piece of #art based on the sacred #Pagan symbol known in Finnish as the '#tursaansydän' ('heart of Tursas'), which incorporates a #swastika inside of a cross.   #Tursas is an ancient god of war, and the tursaansydän is also an age-old Finnish national symbol, and the simpler swastika is still our national emblem today (it is even present on our Air Force and President's flags). The blue represents the sky and the thousands of lakes in #Finland, and the movement of the symbol represents the passage of time and the persistence of tradition. © @w41n4m01n3n

There is proven that the Native Scandinavian people went cross-country skiing for over 5,000 years ago. Skiing as a sport emerged during the 18th century, mainly in the Nordic countries, and has become one of Norway's most popular sports. Skiing has also been mentioned in Old Norse Mythology and since the Viking Age, and is even depicted on some rock carvings and rune stones. The oldest preserved image of a skier (possibly Ullr) is found at the Böksta runestone in Balingsta, Uppland in Sweden.
