The CSAT 2023 has triggered complaints from various student groups about its difficulty. However, one group of students, i.e, Engineers remains overlooked and unheard amidst this discussion. These engineers, who typically relied on math and logic questions to pass, are now facing challenges. Many come from modest backgrounds with limited exposure to literature and social sciences, making it difficult for them to understand reading passages. They dedicated their academic years to building technical skills for job prospects. GS 1, which covers history, geography, politics, economics, sociology, and culture up to the 12th grade, already pushes them out of their comfort zone. This situation would be like non-engineers studying advanced scientific topics and calculus. The engineers also lack descriptive writing skills due to their engineering-focused education, and the new CSAT format adds the requirement of comprehension preparation. On top of that, in a recent suggestion by a parliamentary panel, there is a recommendation to rationalize the selection process in UPSC, as engineers have been selected in larger numbers compared to candidates from other streams. Although no one knows what steps UPSC will take to address this imbalance, the dual tensions are taking a mental toll on aspirants from engineering backgrounds. Credit: Gaurav Sharma
