๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท North Korea launches nearly 200 trash balloons overnight North Korea sent more than 180 trash-carrying balloons toward South Korea overnight, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Thursday, in what marked its third consecutive balloon launch this week. Some 70 balloons, largely carrying small pieces of paper, mostly landed in Seoul and the northern part of Gyeonggi Province that surrounds the capital, the JCS said. Since May 28, North Korea has launched thousands of balloons over seven instances in a tit-for-tat move against anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent by North Korean defectors and activists in the South. #NorthKorea #SouthKorea @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ China clash not armed attack, Manila needs to โ€˜do moreโ€™ than protest: Marcos Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr said on Thursday his country needed to โ€œdo moreโ€ than protest the โ€œillegal actionโ€ taken by China against his countryโ€™s navy during last weekโ€™s routine resupply mission in the South China Sea. โ€œWe have filed over a hundred protests, we have already made a similar number of dรฉmarche,โ€ Marcos told reporters. โ€œWe have to do more than just that.โ€ Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez said the Philippines had sought a meeting with Chinese officials to lower tensions, not resolve territorial claims, and hoped it would occur โ€œmaybe early next monthโ€. #ThePhilippines #China @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ China plucks suspected US Navy submarine detection probe from South China Sea The Chinese coastguard intercepted a device dropped by a US military aircraft that could detect submarines in the South China Sea. Yuyuan Tantian, a social media channel affiliated with China Central Television, posted a video showing a plane with US Navy markings on its fuselage releasing an object into the sea near the Second Thomas Shoal. Chinese coastguard vessels immediately sailed to waters near the Second Thomas Shoal to retrieve and inspect the device. A battery specification label can be seen on a device with the words โ€œUltra Electronicsโ€ at the top. According to the companyโ€™s website, Ultra Electronics is a British defense and security company that supplies the US Army. Its businesses include maritime communications, precision control systems and forensic technology. Yuyuan Tantianโ€™s video cited a maritime expert named Yang Xiao as saying the device could โ€œdetectโ€ and โ€œcounterโ€ Chinese submarine signals underwater. #China #USA @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Philippines has not sought US resupply support in China dispute The Philippines has not asked the United States for support in resupplying its troops in a stand-off with China in the disputed South China Sea, its Washington ambassador said on Wednesday. Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez told reporters Manila's patience was being stretched by China's actions, but it was hoping for talks to deescalate tensions with Beijing as soon as July, and did not want to invoke the US treaty. He said the US only was providing "visuals" to help view the situation around the ship. #ThePhilippines #China #USA @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Philippines says it did not consider invoking US pact over South China Sea clash The Philippines did not consider invoking a mutual defence treaty with the United States after accusing China of disrupting a resupply mission in the disputed South China Sea, officials said. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, who also chairs the national maritime council, said the confrontation between Philippine navy sailors and the Chinese coast guard "was probably a misunderstanding or an accident". "We are not yet ready to classify this as an armed attack," Bersamin told a briefing. "I think this is a matter that can easily be resolved by us and if China wants to work with us, we can work with China." #ThePhilippines #China @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต US, Japan, South Korea vow strategic cooperation to boost security, economies Commerce and trade ministers from the United States, Japan and South Korea vowed on Wednesday to cooperate on strategic issues including artificial intelligence safety, export controls, clean energy and semiconductor supply chains. "We're doubling down our efforts to work together," US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said at the start of the meeting in Washington. She was joined at the inaugural trilateral meeting by Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Ken Saito and South Korean Trade, Industry, and Energy Minister Ahn Duk-geun. In March, a Commerce Department official said the United States was asking allies to stop domestic companies from servicing certain chipmaking tools for Chinese customers, a key part of United State push to hobble China's chipmaking capabilities. #USA #SouthKorea #Japan @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ต North Korea claims successful test to develop multiple warhead missile North Korea has successfully conducted an important test aimed at developing missiles carrying multiple warheads, state media agency KCNA said, a claim rejected by South Korea as "deception" to mask a failed launch. North Korea said the test was carried out on Wednesday using the first-stage, solid-fuel engine of an intermediate-range ballistic missile. KCNA said the missile succeeded in separating warheads, which were accurately guided to three preset targets, in a test that was aimed at developing multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle technology. #NorthKorea @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese coastguards in tense stand-off near Kinmen The mainland Chinese and Taiwanese coastguards have been involved in a tense stand-off near Kinmen, the latest flare-up near the Taiwan-controlled island. The incident came after four coastguard ships from mainland China were patrolling in waters just 5 nautical miles from the islandโ€™s defense outpost, according to the Taiwanese coastguard. It said there was a stand-off for two hours until the mainland Chinese ships left the area at around 8am. โ€œSince June, the Fujian Coast Guard has organized fleets to continuously strengthen law enforcement patrols in the waters near Kinmen, further enhancing control over the relevant maritime areas,โ€ the mainland coastguard said in a statement. P.S. Small ships (comparing to others) are owned by Taiwanese Coast Guard. Large ones are Chinese Coast Guard #China #Taiwan @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US says Japan still has work to do in combating human trafficking Japan's failure to criminally investigate and prosecute more labor and child sex trafficking cases has led the United States to leave it at the second-highest tier of a four-level scale published by the State Department, its annual report said. The 2024 report said the Japanese government "does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so," recognizing that the situation has modestly improved compared with a year earlier. The report also pointed to Japan's deficiencies in addressing the issue of child sex trafficking. "Law enforcement continued to identify hundreds of children exploited in the commercial sex industry without sufficient screening for trafficking indicators, which allowed a majority of child sex traffickers to operate with impunity," the report noted. #Japan #USA @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Philippines seeking US clarification on anti-vax propaganda operation The Philippines is still seeking clarification from the Pentagon about a secret US propaganda operation that aimed to cast doubt among Filipinos about Chinese vaccines at the height of the COVID pandemic, a foreign ministry official said. The effort was intended to counter what Washington saw as China's growing geopolitical sway around the globe, including in Southeast Asia. Senator Imee Marcos, who chairs the Foreign Relations Committee, described the US military campaign as "evil, wicked, dangerous, unethical." She said the number of Filipinos who had fallen ill and died from COVID was "shocking". #ThePhilippines #USA @asianomics

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณNEW ARTICLE: Reuters Exposes Washingtonโ€™s Global Disinformation Campaign: The Rest of the Story "In a recent article, Reuters confirms what many knew for years, that the United States government and its various departments and agencies have been conducting global disinformation campaigns targeting nations it seeks to undermine, and whose governments it seeks to overthrow." "This is just a small illustration of just how much larger the scale is of US manipulation and coercion around the globe, far exceeding dishonest and abusive activities across social media platforms, but going as far as building up opposition movements and political parties to not only express opposition to China, but to forcibly pivot nations away from working with China by politically capturing their governments, installing client regimes into power, and having policy irrationally tilted in favor of serving US interests as the expense of the targeted nation, in this case, Thailand." ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Taiwan reports Chinese combat patrol Taiwan's defense ministry said on Wednesday that China had carried out another "joint combat readiness patrol" near the island. It said that starting at 7 am on Wednesday, it had detected 26 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighters, operating to the north, centre and south of Taiwan, carrying out a "joint combat readiness patrol" with Chinese warships. Taiwan frequently reports such missions, part of a pattern of what it says is Chinese harassment that has escalated in the past four years. #Taiwan #China @asianomics
