* Direct app launching: Activating an item in the menu now opens the app directly without navigating through a submenu. Pinning and system app details are now actions available on the row via the Actions Rotor or by double-tapping and holding to open them as a list. Pinning keeps the menu open, while app details close it first.
* Expanded menu capacity: The menu now remembers 30 apps instead of 12.
* Predictable navigation: "Previous app" and "Next app" actions are now anchored on your current app, ensuring the first gesture always lands on the previously used app. Only launchable apps enter the list, excluding permission dialogs and system components.
Speech
* Uninterrupted gesture announcements: Spoken announcements requested via gestures (such as time, battery level, window title, or phonetic spelling) are no longer dropped when media is playing, a microphone is open, or a call is active.
Settings
* Sound settings stability: Accessing sound settings no longer crashes the screen reader on devices without a vibration motor.
* Dialer keypad improvements: Resting a finger on a key to hear it no longer triggers a long press (e.g., "1" won't dial voicemail and "0" won't become a plus sign). Typing on lift works smoothly, and deliberate long presses remain available via double-tap and hold.
* Physical keyboard navigation: Arrow keys on physical keyboards now move item by item (like a swipe gesture) regardless of the active rotor setting.
Scripts
* Custom script options: Scripts can now declare custom options along with their type and default values. These can be adjusted in "My scripts" or directly from the Talk Forward menu within the app where the script is running.
* Clock function: Added tf.now() to allow scripts to measure time and rate-limit themselves in active or fast-updating apps.
Help and Translations
* Updated help guide: The help section now accurately reflects current gestures (e.g., sending from the braille keyboard is three fingers up instead of two; hold-to-dictate is disabled by default; scrub requires a single back-and-forth movement; rotor groups are listed; two-finger swipes show real defaults; and a new section covers the letter keyboard).
* Braille keyboard help page: Accurately reflects the currently active keyboard layout, and customized gestures now apply correctly.
* Translation completions: All strings have been translated into the app's 75 supported languages (fixing around 20,000 untranslated English strings). Also fixed an issue where the wrong dictation engine was listed in Simplified Chinese. | 383 |
| 15 | Offline Dictation (with Parakeet)
* A new dictation engine runs entirely on the device: It performs almost as well as the online smart engine. Nothing is sent anywhere, and it works completely offline with no network connection. It handles punctuation and capitalization automatically, and retains English words spoken in the middle of a French sentence. On a Pixel 9, 24 seconds of speech are processed in just 1.5 seconds, and the text appears as soon as you lift your finger.
* The model is not included in the app: It can be downloaded by going to Settings > Dictation under the "Parakeet model" row. The file size is 478 MB, downloads over Wi-Fi only, and takes up about 670 MB of storage on the device. Download progress is announced, you can navigate away from the screen while it runs, and you can delete it later from the same row. Speech recognition is powered by NVIDIA Parakeet TDT 0.6B v3 and sherpa-onnx.
* Online dictation remains the default engine: It still makes slightly fewer mistakes when you hesitate while speaking.
Dictation on the Device
* "Offline only" setting: Forces the device to use its own local recognizer instead of letting the system select a service that might send your voice to a server. If no local model is downloaded, the device will inform you instead of silently dictating over the network.
* Local spoken punctuation: Saying "comma", "period", or "new line" inserts the corresponding mark based on the language's typography rules. This setting is located in Dictation and applies to all engines.
* Voice editing via gestures: You can now edit text using voice commands like "replace Saturday with Sunday", "delete the last three words", "capitalize Lyon", "read it back", or "undo". Commands are caught and processed instantly by the device's local recognizer without needing internet. Each edit announces what was changed. If an utterance matches no command, nothing is changed or inserted into the field—it is simply read back to you.
* Expanded script support for numbers: Numbers spoken in Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Thai, and other scripts are now recognized within voice commands.
* Reorganized Dictation screen: Options specific to the smart engine only appear while that engine is selected.
On-Screen Keyboards
* Number row: The letter keyboard can now display a row of digits above the letters. This option can be enabled in on-screen keyboard settings, which slightly increases the height of the keyboard.
* App resizing above keyboard: The app now resizes above the keyboard so the send button and the last lines of text no longer get buried under the keys.
* Two-finger spread gesture fixed: Spreading two fingers to access the braille keyboard now works as expected (previously, the required distance was wider than the screen width, causing the gesture to trigger dictation instead).
* Stopping dictation: Dictation can now be stopped reliably using a two-finger double tap at any time, fixing an issue where starting playback while the microphone remained open made locking the phone the only way out.
* Echo and repetition fixes: Fixed an issue where typing on Gboard or a physical keyboard caused letters to be announced twice followed by "end of field". Also fixed double-echo issues in braille on web fields (such as Gmail's compose screen).
Braille Keyboard
* Dynamic orientation adaptation: Dots and swipes now adapt to how you hold the phone when layout settings are set to "adapt to how you hold the device". The accelerometer detects posture changes live and announces them. Explicit selections (such as "flat" or "screen away") always take priority. Previously, non-explicit postures defaulted to flat on a table, causing dots and swipes to be mirrored for users holding the phone.
* Landscape rotation: Turning the phone half a turn in landscape (charging port on the opposite side) now rotates the dot grid and swipes along with it. | 358 |
