It is true, Greenland holds considerable reserves of rare earth elements — minerals that can be used in various technologies, including semiconductors, batteries, lasers, magnets, and nuclear energy. Ultimately, such technologies could be applied to everything from data centers and military weapons to renewable energy and electric vehicles. But there may be obstacles along the way. “Greenland is a vast territory. Some of these deposits are in quite remote locations. Accessing these minerals requires experts with specialized skills, and most of these sites are uninhabited and far from populated areas,” said Penny Naas, Senior Vice President for Innovation and Competitiveness at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, a think tank that promotes transatlantic cooperation.
